Wednesday morning, Netflix dropped a trailer for its upcoming superhero/thriller, Project Power. Starring Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dominique Fishback, this first look sets up a world where anyone can have superpowers. You have to take a pill, and it only lasts five minutes – but still! It’s directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the same team behind Paranormal Activity 3 and 4, as well as Catfish. Mattson Tomlin, who helped write Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman, is responsible for the spec script.

Foxx stars as the father of a missing girl, with Gordon-Levitt as a New Orleans cop, and Fishback as a local dealer. Seemingly by circumstance, the trio is forced to work together to combat the mysterious forces and “the next evolution of the human species,” turning the drug against its creators. As Gordon-Levitt’s character explains in the trailer though, you never know what your power will be until you actually take the pill, and it seems that the manufacturers are testing the product on the people of New Orleans – a well-thought-out plan that certainly won’t draw international attention.

Oddly, there’s been little to no PR on the movie until now which… doesn’t bode well. It seems it caught the most attention back in 2018, when Gordon-Levitt injured himself on a bike towards the end of filming.

Project Power hits Netflix about a month from today, on August 14. Check out the trailer and synopsis below.

“On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Dominique Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Jamie Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it.”
