Next in Crunchyroll’s Originals lineup is Onyx Equinox, a Latinx animated series created and produced by Sofia Alexander. Originally announced along with the onset of the platform’s in-house slate, the series will feature “fantastical-yet-authentic Mesoamerican cultures,” as it follows its protagonist, a young Aztec boy named Izel. Along with its recent push to adapt Korean I.P. into animation, the series continues to expand Crunchyroll’s diversity. Below, we’ve got a first look at a trailer, as well as key art.

Alexander herself is a well-seasoned creator in the animation world, having recently worked on Cartoon Network’s Infinity Train, The Powerpuff Girls, Nickelodeon’s Invader ZIM: Enter the Florpus, and also recently participated in the inaugural Native American Showrunner program. Now, she works with Crunchyroll Studios Production for the upcoming Onyx Equinox. Check out details on the series below, and stay tuned for more as it comes.

Onyx Equinox follows a young Aztec boy named Izel who is saved from death by the gods and is chosen to act as ‘humanity’s champion,’ forced to discard his apathy toward his fellow man and prove humanity’s potential.

The trailer gives fans a first look at Izel’s epic journey, which will take him across ancient Mesoamerica to save humanity from a war between the gods.
