The Top Comics to Buy for September 6 list has not one but two entries from DC Comics, and you know what? It very easily could have had more. This is just a very strong week from the publisher, with a number of exciting new jumping on points. But! DC wasn’t the only one with strong books this week … you can find all my usual recommendation lists below — enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy for September 6, 2023
Barnstormers #3
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Tula Lotay
Colorist: Dee Cunniffe
Letterer: Richard Starkings
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
A high-flying, WW1 adventure story that’s an intimate portrait of love and war-and a meditation on the dangerous level of trust required in both romance and aviation. There’s nowhere left to run. With Hawk and Tillie at their absolute lowest, what will happen when they finally come face-to-face with the man tasked with putting an end to their high-flying adventures.
Why It’s Cool: This character-driven, relentlessly-stylish heist/romance/thriller comes to an end with the book’s most exciting high-flying action sequences to date. This Eisner-winning comic has been fantastic, start to finish.

Batman #137 – The Gotham War Part 2
Writer: Chip Zdarsky
Artist: Jorge Jimenez
Colorist: Tomeu Morey
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
BATMAN/CATWOMAN: THE GOTHAM WAR PART 2! Batman descends on Gotham City, full of rage and force, more driven than ever to save his home. But the new landscape has turned friends into foes. Can anyone stop his reign of terror? Should they? The Gotham War continues in this second chapter!
Why It’s Cool: In its second chapter, the new Batman/Catwoman – The Gotham War storyline delivers what is probably my favorite single issue comic from the main Batman title in a very long time. This book has an all-time great action set piece, a pushing ahead of the larger story, and a last page reveal that I didn’t see coming but absolutely loved. This was an easy addition to the top comics to buy for September 6 list.
Price: $4.99
Birds of Prey #1
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Leonardo Romero
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
BREAKING HEARTS AND FACES—THE BIRDS OF PREY ARE BACK! Every mission matters. Every life saved is a miracle. But this time, it’s personal. Dinah Lance is one of the DCU’s most elite fighters, and combined with her sonic scream, she’s a fearsome foe in any scenario…but sometimes even the Black Canary needs help. Faced with a personal mission brought to her by a mysterious new ally, and up against near-impossible odds, she re-forms the Birds of Prey with an unrivaled group of badasses—Cassandra Cain, Big Barda, Zealot, and Harley Quinn—and only one goal: extraction without bloodshed. What could possibly go wrong?
Why It’s Cool: This book is — simply put — fantastic, maybe the best Birds of Prey comic I’ve ever read. The team is perfect, both the creative team and the characters they assemble. I really can’t say enough good things about this comic. It looks great, moves quickly, and leaves you wanting more.

Project Cryptid #1

New AHOY anthology series, featuring Bigfoot, Yetis, Nessies, Jersey Devils, and more! AHOY presents a deep dive into all things cryptid, legendary, tall tale, and fanciful, written by some of your favorite writers. Issue 1 features Mark Russell’s Yeti and Paul Cornell’s Mongolian Death Worm. Also: to celebrate AHOY’s fifth anniversary, all books from Sep-Nov feature an epic multi-writer prose story-starting here, with a 7-page opening chapter by Grant Morrison!
Why It’s Cool: Cryptids are one of those things that when you put them in a comic, they just work. And they especially work well when you let creators like Mark Russell, Paul Cornell, Jordi Perez, and PJ Holden have some fun with them. Plus, this comic has new prose by Grant Morrison!

Swan Songs #3
Writer: W. Maxwell Prince
Artist: Filipe Andrade
Letterer: Good Old Neon
Publisher: Image Comics
The atomic clock hit zero, and the world was forever changed.
Here, our demolished planet’s would-be Adam and Eve try to create a new Eden in the nuclear aftermath†but some things simply weren’t meant to be.
Drawn in exquisite colored pencils, this is another of our lives loud, lonesome SWAN SONGS.
Why It’s Cool: This Swan Songs comic remains such a treat. Writer W. Maxwell Prince has spent years honing his ability to write the perfect single issue story, and with this book, he’s using it to do a series of emphatic endings, brought to life by some of the most interesting artists in comics. This month’s takes on the end of the world.
