Before we get into the list of Top Comics to Buy for September 14, 2022 proper, I just want to point out that artist Hayden Sherman has not one, not two, but three books in this week’s bunch, with those being Dark Spaces – Wildfire #3 (which made my top five), Above Snakes #3 (which was very close), and a short in Batman: Urban Legends #19. It’s kind of a rare thing for that much of one artist’s work to line up its release schedule in this way. Anyway! Enough rambling…onto the full lists, which you can find as always below.

Top Comics to Buy for September 14, 2022

Comics to Buy for September 14Bone Orchard Mythos – Ten Thousand Black Features #1
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Andrea Sorrentino
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Steve Wands
Publisher: Image Comics
From the acclaimed creative team behind GIDEON FALLS, PRIMORDIAL, and THE PASSAGEWAY comes a new series in the bold and ambitious shared horror universe of THE BONE ORCHARD MYTHOS.
Trish and Jackie are best friends and avid gamers. But when the line between reality and their fantasy world is blurred by an evil darkness, can they be the heroes of their own story?
Why It’s Cool: This book marks the latest entry in Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino’s shared horror universe — dubbed the Bone Orchard Mythos — and it is also, for my money, the strongest comic in that universe so far. This book has the usual trippy terror visuals, just with a great focus on a young friendship and references to Ursula K. Le Guin. Great stuff

Dark Spaces – Wildfire #3
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Hayden Sherman
Colorist: Ronda Pattison
Letterer: AndWorld Design
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Our ragtag crew of firefighting inmates may have found what they were looking for, but along with it, they discovered the threat of something far more dangerous than the blaze around them. The trouble is just beginning!
Why It’s Cool:
I have written in this space about why I liked this comic in the past, but to reiterate, it’s a smart, character-driven heist story cum murder mystery wherein the plot just keeps becoming more intricate and interesting. Plus, the artwork in this comic is just absolutely stunning, from the colors to the way it’s all framed.

Iron Man #23
Writer: Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Angel Unzueta
Colorist: Frank D’Armata
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Operating in stealth mode with Jim Rhodes, Iron Man has landed in Macau and immersed himself in SOURCE CONTROL – the worst black market of stolen and illegal technology – all in order to organize a backroom buy of THE MANDARIN’S RINGS. It’s going to require Tony Stark-level capital and strategy, but SPYMASTER may have a different buyer – and a wicked double cross – at the ready in order to pull the rug out from under Iron Man’s boots. It seems someone else is willing to pay top dollar for those rings and is ready to pull them out of Iron Man’s dead hands if they have to… THE COBALT MAN.
Why It’s Cool:
I have absolutely loved every issue of this run, and this one is no different. With this story’s finale headed our way in #25, it continues to play to the strengths of this run from the start, drilling down into Tony Stark as a comics character (not the same guy as the movie) and using Marvel continuity deep cuts to explore him in the context of today. I’ll just say it one more time — I absolutely love this run.

comics to buy for September 14Love Everlasting #2
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Elsa Charretier
Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Image Comics
Joan wakes into another nightmare of love. 1920. She’s the maid and Roger’s the heir to the manor, and though it is forbidden, they are inevitably drawn together. But soon clichés begin to crumble and blood begins to spill as Joan fights back.
Why It’s Cool:
These days, romance comics aren’t the easiest genre to find (at least not in the direct market), so this book is interesting on those merits. Although, it’s more of a metafictional examination of romance and western comics (another sort of bygone genre), than it is a true romance comic. Either way, it’s exceedingly well-done. Elsa Charretier (colored here by Matt Hollingsworth) is a major talent, and Tom King is always trying something interesting. Very curious to see where this goes.
Price: $3.99

Mindset #3
Writer: Zack Kaplan
Artist: John Pearson (with assists by Jimmy Savage)
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Vault Comics
Ben Sharp and his friends build a new command center for their startup, replete with new coders and good intentions, but when their app goes viral and they achieve overnight success as the hottest technopreneurs in the Valley, they’ll find themselves swimming with sharks and facing the dangerous dilemma of just how unscrupulous they are willing to be for their vision.
Why It’s Cool:
Rounding out this weeks Top Comics to Buy for September 14, 2022 (purely due to alphabetical reasons) is Mindset #3, which has emerged from the pack as the best exploration of the scary power of tech companies, at least in a comic. It’s also really well-told visually. This one is a must-read.
