This Top Comics to Buy for July 31 is a tough one, not because the comics are bad, but because I’m currently on my way back from San Diego Comic Con…exhausted. But I soldiered through, read some comics, and here I am doling out my usual set of weekly comics recommendations all the same. You can find them below, along with the usual set of other lists … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for July 31, 2024

On Throneworld, Davian enters an uneasy alliance with a Cassandra, but will their alliance reveal the Empress’s true agenda, or is it just part of a longer game?
Why It’s Cool:
This book is always gorgeous, but this most recent arc is really upping the stakes and bringing the full scope into focus. Be prepared for twists, because this book has them.

$6.99

comics to buy for July 31Grommets #3

A house party plan is hatched on a ditch day at the arcade when Rick and Brian take their shot at the girl of their dreams, but will Liberty Spike Mike’s defiance of Nancy Reagan make their dreams go up in smoke?
Why It’s Cool:
This book is making a sneaky case to be one of my favorite comics of the year. I love the art (almost all of which has rich and interesting backgrounds), the dialogue, and the whole 1980s California skate aesthetic. This feels like one of those books where every issue will end up making this list — it’s that good.
Price:
$3.99

Masterpiece #6

The explosive finale! Emma is the brilliant young woman whose life has been turned upside down by the reveal that her long lost parents were in fact very famous thieves. A mantle they left to her! Emma has now gotten over the fact that she no idea how to do any of these things and has created her own crew to pull her own plans against all the bastards who have torn her reality apart. Here come the big final twists!
Why It’s Cool:
As good as they are in the run-up, heist stories like Masterpiece are almost always judged by their finale…and this one 100 percent sticks the landing. With the exception of the debut, this is the best issue yet of this book. It’s a satisfying end with stunning artwork.

$3.99

comics to buy for july 31Saga #67
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Fiona Staples
Letterer: Fonografiks
Publisher: Image Comics
Saga returns for its epic 12th arc, as 12-year-old Hazel embarks on the most important adventure of her young life.
Why It’s Cool:
Saga returns this week with a new story arc. It’s actually the books 12th story arc, which is incredibly impressive for this day and age of short runs and limited series. Even more impressive is that the book has maintained the exact same creative team for the full length of its run. Saga doesn’t send review issues in advance, but the book has been stellar start to finish so far. There’s no reason to expect anything less from this new arc.
Price:
$3.99

Ultimate Spider-Man #7

After their intense battle with the Kingpin, Green Goblin and Spider-Man both know they aren’t as ready to reshape the world as they hoped. Harry and Peter get to work, while Ben and Jonah work on “the truth”… And problems for their resistance arise when the ULTIMATES return!
Why It’s Cool:
This is the one where the connectivity of the larger new Ultimate Universe really starts to matter. The book has been great so far, and this issue pushes forward a number of story threads in interesting ways.

$4.99
