This week’s Top Comics to Buy for January 24 is an odd one, in that there’s not a single new #1 on it. In fact, even odder, is that there’s also not one but two series finale on the list. I don’t track these things, but I can’t remember if this has ever happened before, which is perhaps telling. Anyway! You can find the usual recommendations and lists below … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for January 24, 2024

comics to buy for january 24Holy Roller #3
Writers: Rick Remender, Andy Samberg, and Joe Trohman
Artist: Roland Boschi
Colors: Moreno Dinisio
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics
Levi Cohen’s return home is short-lived as he retreats to the rock he climbed from underneath. But sometimes the rock has different ideas. And I’m not talking about the movie star. What am I talking about? You’ll have to buy this comic to find out!
Why It’s Cool:
There’s a bunch of celebrities on the creative team (well, two…), but you could cover up their names, and this comic would still be cool. Through three issues it’s been a really well-done, superhero origin story that uses strong family dynamics and having a bowling ball weapon to reel you in. Once you’ve been reeled in, there’s an interesting take here on some of the evils that have resurfaced in American society in the last 20 years…and how they’ve been lurking all along.

comics to buy for january 24Lotus Land #3
Writer: Darcy Van Poelgeest
Artist: Caio Filipe
Colorist: Patricio Delpeche
Letterer: Nate Piekos
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Bennie is in dire bloody straits, but superhuman help from someone with a shared past may be what he needs to make it out alive. As he gets wrapped up in a murder investigation and has to clear his name, he also visits some ruins of the past that will finally shed some light on the young girl from his visions.
Why It’s Cool:
I was intrigued by the first issue of this book, but I was really hooked by how it progressed through the second and third issues. This is a weird one, and I mean that in the most complimentary way. It’s a hard sci-fi noir detective ghost story (I think, there’s room for more swerves here…), and I’m super into it.

Punisher #3
Writer: David Pepose
Artist: Dave Watcher
Colorist: Dan Brown
Letterer: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
ENTER…THE FEARMASTER!
Hunted down by the authorities, the Punisher must face down the one threat that cannot be stopped by bombs or bullets…the terrors inside his own mind. With an innocent life hanging in the balance, can the Punisher escape the Fearmaster’s deadly abattoir, or will his quest for vengeance be cut short just as his true enemy stands revealed?
Why It’s Cool:
I don’t know how else to say it, but this book is a banger. Artist Dave Watcher is doing a star turn on these Punisher comics, colored perfectly by Dan Brown, and just delivering gritty, fantastic action-packed pages. And writer David Pepose has taken what might be the hardest character in superhero comics, and done something new and fun with it, leaning into horror. It’s a shame this series is ending, but I’m going to enjoy the heck out of it before it does.

comics to buy for january 24Rumpus Room #5
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist:Ramon Rosanas
Colorist:Ive Svorcina
Letterer: AndWorld Design
Publisher: AWA Studios
Don’t miss the concluding chapter of Mark Russell’s satirical horror thriller!
As eccentric tech billionaire Bob Schrunk publicly shows off his bizarre art gallery on an internet talk show, the prisoners in his “Rumpus Room” hatch one last plan to free themselves. Can Detective Hernandez lead them out of the endless, deadly cycle of voting on who will be the next to be crushed into Schrunk’s special skin cream?
Why It’s Cool:
This comic has been so good from the start, and I think all the previous issues have appeared in this column, too. Well friends, I am happy to now report that the finale absolutely sticks the landing. This is a great book, and if you somehow missed it in singles, I highly recommending picking up the trade.

Universal Monsters – Dracula #4
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Martin Simmonds
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics – Skybound
Mini-Series Finale. The final confrontation between Dr. Seward, Van Helsing, and Count Dracula is here!
Why It’s Cool:
This comic is gorgeous. Martin Simmonds is really doing career-best work on this book, which is really saying something. It’s the type of comic that could be a good coffee-table book, a big hardcover you could set out and have friends page through. Just gorgeous storytelling and art.
