This week’s top comics to buy for December 6 is majority comics in the middle of their runs. I’ve never counted, but that sometimes feels rarer than weeks when the new #1s dominate. There’s just so many books that are hitting their stride late this year, and we’ve got a trio of them this week. You find out what they are below, along with our usual set of lists … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for December 6, 2023

Birds of Prey #4
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Leonardo Romero
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
Chaos reigns as the first mission for the Birds of Prey has (unsurprisingly) gone sideways. Even with the collective battle prowess of her hand-picked team, did Black Canary bring enough firepower to fight their way off Themyscira?!
Why It’s Cool:
This entire series has been and continues to be awesome, but this particular issue has one of the most memorable superhero knock-down drag-out fights all year between Wonder Woman and Big Barda. It’s excellent.
Price:
$3.99

Bloodrik #1
Creator: Andrew Krahnke
Publisher: Image Comics
Bloodrik is angry, confused, and starving. Unable to achieve success in his usual hunting grounds, he stomps his way into unfamiliar woods in an attempt to feed his stomach and heal his ego. What he finds will lead him on a journey of madness, violence, fire, and BLOOD!
Why It’s Cool:
This comic is austere and savage. It lets its details speak to its larger ideas to great effect. You’ll appreciate how well-done the classic barbarian imagery is, and how much credit the storytelling gives you as a reader to understand its themes. Simply put, more comics like this please.
Price:
$3.99

Our Bones Dust #1
Creator: Ben Stenbeck
Publisher: Image Comics
A feral child equal parts predator and prey, navigates a nightmare landscape of brutality and blood inhabited by scattered cannibal tribes. An interesting place to poke around for a curious Artificial Intelligence. A four issue mini-series by long-time Mike Mignola collaborator Ben Stenbeck (Baltimore, Frankenstein Underground, Koshchei).
Why It’s Cool:
This is the first major work that Ben Stenbeck has done on his own, outside of collaborating with Mignola — and it’s fantastic. It’s a weird, sort of genre-bending comic that looks amazing. It’s a great story, but it’s also rich with some of the best character and item designs I’ve seen in comics all year. This was an easy addition to this list of Top Comics to Buy for December 6.
Price:
$3.99

Petrol Head #2
Writer: Rob Williams
Artist/Letterer/Designer: Pye Parr
START YOUR ROBO-ENGINES! THE CHASE IS ON!
Petrol Head and Lupa gun it for the SmogZone border with half the O-Zone’s security drones and robo cops on their trail. Can one old racing robot outdrive the best new tech the city can build? And will Lupa’s father survive the experience?
Why It’s Cool:
Petrol Head is my favorite new comic of the year. Full stop. It’s my favorite new original comic in a good long while, in fact. Everything from the characterization to the incredible aesthetic is perfect in this book. Not only were they bold enough to make a car comic, but the second issue is basically a chase issue. And it rules. Expect to see new issues of Petrol Head on this list probably as long as the creators keep making it.
Price:
$3.99

Transformers #3
Writer/Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson
Colorist:Mike Spicer
Letterer:Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics – Skybound
Outnumbered and overpowered, it’s time for the Autobots to stand their ground, as Optimus Prime goes to toe to toe with Skywarp!
Why It’s Cool:
For lack of a more elegant way to put it, this comic just kicks all kinds of ass. There’s awesome Transformer art, there’s wrestling moves, there’s tragic and unpredictable plot twists. If you’re going to launch a new shared universe with familiar IP, this is a pretty emphatic way to do it. Can’t recommend this book more.
