You can find which endings made the weekly top five below, along with the rest of our usual lists…enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy for August 30, 2023
Black Hammer – The End #1
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Malachi Ward
Colorist: Bryce Davidson
Letterer: Nate Piekos
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
The Eisner Award-winning superhero saga returns in this series picking up immediately after the events of the hit Reborn series. In this multi-timeline, world-hopping adventure, we find new stakes, new heroes, and the long-awaited return to Black Hammer farm with Weber family re-uniting and facing new challenges and villains in Jeff Lemire’s biggest event in the Black Hammer series thus far!
Why It’s Cool: The main narrative in Black Hammer continues with a new miniseries this week, one that brings in more of the ever-growing cast of characters from monthly comics best alternative superhero universe. The Malachi Ward, Bryce Davidson combination is a great one, and this book looks fantastic.

Devil’s Cut #1 (one-shot)
Creators: See this review
Publisher: DSTLRY
The Devil’s Cut is your introduction to DSTLRY, a new publisher redefining creator-owned comics. In the aging process, the whiskey that evaporates is called the Angel’s Share. But the most potent spirits are captured in the wood-the Devil’s Cut.
This is The Devil’s Cut-unfiltered stories from the most fearless creators, offering a distinct taste of the quality to come. 88 oversized pages printed on premium paper, featuring a flight of high-proof work from our Founding Creators including Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Tula Lotay, Mirka Andolfo, Jock, Becky Cloonan, Brian Azzarello, Marc Bernardin, Elsa Charretier, Lee Garbett, Joelle Jones, Stephanie Phillips, Ram V, Jamie McKelvie, Junko Mizuno and friends including Francesco Francavilla, Ariela Kristantina, Eduardo Risso, Christian Ward, and more. Edited by the legendary Will Dennis.
Why It’s Cool: I had a chance to read this one after they made it an exclusive offering at San Diego Comic-Con, and I absolutely loved it. It’s a very promising start for this new publisher, and an easy choice for our list of Top Comics to Buy for August 30.
Price: $9.99
Knight Terrors – Night’s End #1
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artists: Howard Porter, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, and Trever Hairsine
Colorist: Rain Beredo
Letterer: Troy Peteri
Publisher: DC Comics
KNIGHT TERRORS FINALE! SPECIAL OVERSIZE ISSUE! Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, along with the DCU’s other heroes, have escaped the Nightmare Realm only to find the Nightmare League has followed them home! The entire world has become engulfed in horror, and the last person standing to take down Insomnia is Deadman. But does he want to? And don’t miss the exciting ending that continues the Dawn of DC mystery and introduces Dr. Hate! Wait…who is Dr. Hate? Knight Terrors’ thrills and chills are brought to the DC Universe by DC architect and superstar writer Joshua Williamson with horrific art by comics legend Howard Porter!
Why It’s Cool: I’ve really enjoyed this event, which is a pulpy combination of DC’s superhero universe and horror comics storytelling. It also puts a number of less prominent DC characters at the forefront (Welsey Dodds!). What I really liked about this ending is the way it not only wraps this story up but does a great job seeding new things to come. In fact, the impact of Knight Terrors can already be seen in other DC books this week, including the Batman/Catwoman – The Gotham War Battlines book and the Action Comics Doomsday Special.

Ultimate Invasion #3
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Penciler: Bryan Hitch
Inker: Andrew Currie
Colorist: Alex Sinclair
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Publisher: Marvel Comics
After KANG descends upon the City of Tomorrow, the Illuminati must regroup! IRON MAN has a heart-to-heart with Tony Stark! DOCTOR DOOM – the anti-Maker – prepares his own plans to deal with this evil Reed Richards… and the Ultimate Universe that the Maker thought he had rebuilt frays at the edges as they prepare for cosmic war!
Why It’s Cool: I am, admittedly, very much a child of the Ultimate Universe, which launched during my formative comics years…but I’ve been enjoying this revival from the start. This issue does a neat trick of tying some of the genre-heavy twists and turns from the first two issues with wider, more complex ideas from some of Hickman’s other work. It’s also specifically just a really nice table-setter for the end of this four-issue miniseries later in the month.

w0rldtr33 #5
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Fernando Blanco
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar
Publisher: Image Comics – Tiny Onion Studios
With PH34R ascendent, Gabriel is forced to pull a trigger that will change the shape of the entire world. No sacrifice is too great to stop the spread of the Undernet…
Why It’s Cool: This series has been an absolute stunner so far, excellently well-done and speaking directly to some of the most harrowing existential questions of our lifetimes. There’s some bold storytelling risks in this one (big time jumps!) that will also stoke your interest in the next arc, if the quality of this first one didn’t already have you dying for it.

I love Hickman’s work, but this issue didn’t really have a story, or even a character arc. For me, it was not worth the price of a single issue. Definitely a trade wait for the casual reader.
