This week’s Top Comics to Buy for April 29 features one of the more unique Big 2 comics in recent memory with Swamp Thing 1989, which features the revival of a comic that was cancelled due to concerns its subject matter would be too controversial. DC Comics has brought it back now to finish its story arc, and it’s fascinating. On top of that, I’ve also made my other four top recommendations.

And, as always, I’ve got 10 other books I enjoyed, as well as release lists for this week’s new #1s and graphic novel/trade collections. You can find it all below … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for April 29

The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace #2
Writer: Hannah Rose May
Artist: Kelsey Ramsay
Colorist: Heather Breckel
Letterer: Jodie Troutman
Publisher: IDW Publishing
As his grip on reality loosens, blackout periods now taking place at regular intervals, Theo can’t help but wonder if the political pressure is costing him his mind… just as it cost his mother hers. If he’s going to escape his inner demons, he’ll need to place his trust in a greater power. A power like the president of the United States of America.
Why It’s Cool: I just really like these Exorcism books, in which writer Hannah Rose May and her talented collaborators are forging an alternate world stage where the most prominent figures are possessed (or those close to them) are possessed by demons. This series is also using addiction in interesting ways to tell its possession story, which is something I haven’t really seen before.

Is Ted OK? #3
Cartoonist: Dave Chisholm
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
It’s time for a party! Overwhelmed with paranoia, Ted attends the Ayn-Styne gala, at which Noah™ makes a shocking announcement. Circumstances lead to Ted coming to a soul-crushing revelation, and Ted, already teetering on the edge of sanity, begins to topple spectacularly. A confrontation ensues and the result proves to be deadly–and someone we know and love is sent on a wild trip to a strange dimension. Meanwhile, Kyle confronts Noah™ with a shocking and incredibly stupid truth about the origins of the conflict stirring at The Dome–the mysterious object looming over the future of humanity like a sphinx.
Why It’s Cool: Comics from cartoonist Dave Chisholm are always interesting, but perhaps never more so than when Chisholm offers a look at dark things happening in the mind. This book does that, while also molding it with a near-future post-apocalyptic setting, forged by the malfeasance of egotistic corporate overlords. It’s good.
Price: $5.99

Roots of Madness #6
Writer: Stephanie Williams
Artist: Letizia Cadonici
Colorist: Alessandro Santoro
Letterer: AndWorld Design
Publisher: Ignition Press
Etta’s research into the mysterious flowers that grow around the Meridian Fellowship has allowed her to unlock the secrets of the universe, but at what cost? As the sinister forces within the Fellowship try to wrestle her discoveries away from her, can Etta maintain her grip on reality, or will she succumb to the temptation of the flowers just like those who came before her?
Why It’s Cool: Roots of Madness has been a singular and interesting series since its launch, and this week’s finale is no exception, delivering a shocking-yet-satisfying end to this mini-series.
Price: $4.99

Swamp Thing 1989 #1
Writer: Rick Veitch
Penciller: Michael Zulli
Inker: Vince Locke
Colorist: Trish Mulvhill
Letterer: John Costanza and Todd Klein
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
Over three decades since the controversy and cancellation, Rick Veitch’s legendary lost issues are completed! After a renowned two year run on the series, Veitch’s grand finale to Swamp Thing was cut short, and never to see print! Whispers and leaks hinted at the epic untold saga for years. Now, for the first time, that final story is told! As Swamp Thing is cast back through time, he will come to meet a carpenter who will change the trajectory of his life, and the DC Universe forever. The origin of Etrigan, and Swamp Thing’s journey to the beginning of time starts here!
Why It’s Cool: As I mentioned at the top, I can’t recall a Big 2 comic with this kind of backstory to it. It’s just so unlikely that a publisher would return to one of its most famous cancellations to deliver an ending, and also go to such great lengths to make it look, read, and feel like it was transported from its own era. This book even has 1989 appropriate DC Comics house ads. It’s also just an interesting read, independent of all that.
Price: $4.99

Wrestle Heist #5
Writer/Artist/Letterer: Kyle Starks
Colorist: Vlad Popov
Designer: Dylan Todd
Publisher: Image Comics
WRESTLE HEIST comes to its stunning conclusion as our pro-wrestler heroes attempt to successfully complete their heist of the biggest wrestling show of the year. Can they get past the monster Fetu? Can they escape Scott free? Will there be wrestling? You’ll have to read to find out! By three time Eisner nominee KYLE STARKS (Peacemaker: Tries Hard, Rick and Morty, End of Life, Sexcastle) and colors by VLADIMIR POPOV (Where Monsters Lie). It’s time to snap into a mega fun finale!
Why It’s Cool: One wonders where Kyle Starks and co. got the idea for a maniac, deprived wrestling promoter who serves his ego and bottom line at the expense of the people who work for him, often transcending even his own interests to indulge in blatant wanton cruelty. Huh. Guess we’ll never know. But hey, this book was fantastic!
