Top Comics to Buy for April 19, 2023

All Eight Eyes #1
Writer: Steve Foxe
Artist: Piotr Kowalski
Colorist: Brad Simpson
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
In the forgotten corners of post-9/11 New York City, skittering shapes in the darkness prey on the people society leaves behind. College dropout Vin Spencer floats through life in a drug-and-party-fueled haze, until one terrible night sweeps him into a drifter’s reckless war against the giant eight-legged horrors stalking the city.
Why It’s Cool:
This book serves up urban horror that feels really, truly creepy. It’s a great and very gritty concept, and the creative team does a great job realizing the full potential of the concept. The writing is sharp, the visuals chilling, and the ending intriguing enough to bring anyone back for the next issue.
Price: $3.99

Harrower #3
Writer: Justin Jordan
Artist: Brahm Revel
Letterer: Pat Brosseau
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
The Harrower proves difficult to kill, but killing comes easy for him.
With the group split in two, no cell service, and the police being suspiciously useless-someone won’t make it out alive.
After witnessing a shocking betrayal, Jessa unearths a massive secret, and it turns out the skeletons in the town’s closet involve the last people she expected…
Why It’s Cool: It’s a great period for horror comics, and we’re finally getting what feels like a true teen slasher story in the medium. Through three issues, Harrower has deliver hard-to-predict gory fun, a worthy and interesting addition to a genre many horror fans grew up with.

$4.99

Hitomi #5
Writer: HS Tak
Artist: Isabella Mazzanti
Colorist: Valentina Napolitano
Letterer: Rob Jones
Publisher: Image Comics
Trapped inside Takimoto’s labyrinth and fighting to survive, Hitomi must confront Yasuke and their shared past if either is to have any hope of a future. Hitomi’s journey concludes in this heart-pounding final issue of the series.
Why It’s Cool:
One of the best-looking miniseries in recent memory wraps up this week with an action-packed finale. This has been a great book from its start, and they definitely stick the landing here. More over, it also felt like maybe we will see more stories set in this world soon.
Price:
$3.99

Superman #3
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Letterer: Ariana Maher
Publisher: DC Comics
SUPERMAN’S LOVED ONES ARE TRANSFORMED INTO RAVENOUS PARASITES! If Superman wants to find Parasite-Zero before its influence spreads to the whole world, he must take Lex up on his offer to work together! Even if it means using another of Superman’s enemies as bait!
Why It’s Cool:
Well, they did it — this creative team opened up with a first story arc that was satisfying start to finish. Largely powered by the Superman-Lex dynamic (one of my favorite character relationships in all of comics) this arc had some great moments while also laying narrative track for the future. Just great stuff all around.

$4.99

Terrorwar #1
Writer: Saladin Ahmed
Artist: Dave Acosta
Colorist: Walter Pereyra
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Publisher: Image Comics
Blue City was the last livable place on Earth. Now it’s crawling with Terrors-creatures that transform into their victims’ worst fears. Humanity’s last hope? Muhammad Cho and his overworked, underpaid crew of freelance Terrorfighters.
Why It’s Cool: Great concept paired with equally great art, Terrorwar #1 delivers a promising new series. There’s dystopian futures everywhere in comics, but this one focuses in on the specific job of a group of characters to separate itself just a bit from the pack, landing on this week’s Top Comics to Buy for April 19.
