Since writer Christopher Cantwell took over the relaunched Iron Man almost two years ago, he’s been making some big changes to old Shellhead’s world, perhaps most noticeably bringing in Patsy Walker (better known as the superhero Hellcat) as a regular supporting character in the book. Readers have seen Tony and Patsy’s growing relationship over the course of the series, but it takes a major step forward this spring as Marvel has announced that Tony will pop the question to Patsy this May in Iron Man #20.

Joining Cantwell is artist Angel Unzetua. In addition to a main cover by Alex Ross there will also be a variant cover by Betsy Cola that pays homage to Hellcat’s romance comic roots. The publisher also teased an Iron Man/Hellcat Annual coming in June.

The irony of Tony Stark settling down with a redhead who isn’t Pepper Potts isn’t lost on anybody. Of course, this being comics it will remain to be seen whether or not Patsy says ‘Yes’, and even if she does whether Tony and Patsy actually go through with the wedding. I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone of the infamous Batman/Catwoman wedding that wasn’t.

Here’s what Cantwell had to say the exciting future of Tony and Patsy’s relationship:

“Since Issue #1, bringing Patsy Walker/Hellcat into this story just felt right. She was the perfect kind of grounded presence in Tony Stark’s hyper-octane world that I believed could help bring more balance to his life. Patsy Walker’s best super-power in my mind has always been her ability to be human and sincere. And like Tony, she has had her share of demons in the past (some literal in her case).

Both Patsy and Tony have gone through fundamental transformations in this story. And as the dust settles, and Tony sees Patsy as this phenomenal force in his life, he does the only thing he can think to do in order to keep her near him and connected: he proposes they be together for the rest of their lives. Of course, marriage is freighted for Patsy in ways it is for few other Marvel characters. Just one her previous relationships took her to the very depths of hell. It’s not an easy decision for her in the least.”

Look for Iron Man #20 to arrive in stores on Wednesday May 11, 2022.

  1. I really admire Alex Ross’s art but for some reason I really dislike his iron man. I get that he wants to show how shiny and reflective it is, but it just comes across as too busy.
