With both APE and Wizard’s Big Apple Comic Con on this weekend, it’s another big week for comics. Further inland, John Porcellino’s tour heats up, and there are THREE separate Darwyn Cooke events. Plus Pixar animators show up at the Shultz Museum, a Marc Bell exhibition opens in NY, James Jean and MORE!

Monday, October 12

Columbus, OH, 7 PM – John Porcellino at Wholly Craft

Mini-comic king John Porcellino continues his cross-country tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of his zine King Cat Comics and the release of his book MAP OF MY HEART, published by Drawn + Quarterly, with a stop at Wholly Craft. Joining him on this leg of the tour is musician Patrick Porter.

Bloomington, IN, 6 PM – John Porcellino at Boxcar Books

Boxcar Books and Community Center hosts a reading and signing with John Porcellino, with a special musical performance by Patrick Porter.

Wednesday, October 14

St. Louis, MO, 5 PM – 7 PM – John Porcellino at Star Clipper Comics

John Porcellino (KING-CAT COMICS AND STORIES, THOREAU AT WALDEN) and musician Patrick Porter make a stop on their mid-west tour at Star Clipper Comics. The above photo is Porcellino from 1989, the year he published the first issue of King-Cat. Dig that Nancy tattoo!

Scott Allie, editor of HELLBOY, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY and THE GOON, and writer of comics like SOLOMON KANE, and newcomer artist Kevin McGovern will be at Floating World Comics to sign copies of their new comic EXURBIA.

Sherman Oaks, CA, 7 PM – 9 PM – Damon Lindelof signing

LOST co-creator and ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS HULK writer Damon Lindelof will sign comics and meet his fans at Earth 2 Comics to celebrate the release of the hardcover collection of ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS HULK.

New York, NY, 6 PM – 8 PM – Marc Bell’s Hot Potatoe opening reception

The Adam Baumgold Gallery presents an exhibition of work by Marc Bell (KRAMER’S ERGOT), coinciding with the release of his new book HOT POTATOE from Drawn + Quarterly. After the opening reception, the exhibition will run through November 25.

Portland, OR, 7 PM – 9 PM – Lift Off signing and release party

Bridge City Comics hosts a special release party for LIFT OFF, the second monthly anthology from zine collective Stumptown Underground, and features work from Dylan Williams, Sean Christensen, Joseph Demaree, Alicia Moreland and others, all centered around the theme of night. The creators will be on hand to sign copies and talk about their work.

Toronto, ON, 7 PM – 11 PM – Noir and Beyond: The Darwyn Cooke Exhibition

Toronto’s Gladstone Hotel hosts an exhibition of work produced by Darwyn Cooke (DC: THE NEW FRONTIER, THE SPIRIT) over the past decade, including an entire chapter from his most recent book, PARKER: THE HUNTER, as well as new and unpublished material.

Chicago, IL, 7 PM – John Porcellino at Quimby’s

Another tour stop featuring a reading and a signing by John Porcellino and Patrick Porter. In case you aren’t familiar with Porcellino’s work, Entertainment Weekly has called him a “master of miniature poignance,” and Chris Ware has said that his comics distill “in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive.”

New York, NY – Big Apple Comic-Con

Wizard hosts a three-day convention, with lots of big name guests, including Joe, Adam and Andy Kubert, Joe Quesada, Jim Lee, Joe Simon, Jim Steranko, Mike Allred, Neal Adams and Joe Madureira. Also appearing are William Shatner, Yogi Berra, Ric Flair and “Smokin'” Joe Frazier … hopefully in preparation for some sort of super team-up project. Admission to Saturday is $35, with Friday and Sunday priced at $30, and a three-day pass at $50. Prices are five bucks cheaper if you order online.

Toronto, ON, 10 AM – 3 PM – Workshop with Darwyn Cooke

There are just 15 spots for this workshop with renowned cartoonist Darwyn Cooke, which includes a lecture, Q&A session and portfolio reviews. For aspiring cartoonists anywhere near Toronto, this should be a do-not-miss event. The cost is $105 per person. More details at the link.

Santa Rosa, CA, 2 PM – 4 PM – Pixar artists at Schulz Museum

A small crew of Pixar animators, including UP co-director Bob Peterson, production designer Ricky Nierva and art director Jason Deamer will make the short trip from Emeryville to the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa to answer audience and talk about creating animated characters for the big screen.

Alhambra, CA, 6 PM – 10 PM – James Jean book signing

Artist James Jean, best known in these parts for providing the stunning covers for FABLES which won him five consecutive Eisner Awards, will sign copies of his two latest books, KINDLING, a poster book, and PROCESS RECESS 3, the latest volume of his sketchbook series.

Toronto, ON, 7 PM – 10 PM – An Evening with Darwyn Cooke

This intimate and interactive session will include a reading by Darwyn Cooke from the original text of Richard Stark’s THE HUNTER, which he recently adapted into a graphic novel, with corresponding images from the graphic novel projected as backdrop. Cooke will be available immediately afterwards to sign copies of his work. Admission is $10, and seating is limited to 75.

San Francisco – Alternative Press Expo

  

Convention season continues in San Francisco, where the Alternative Press Expo gets underway at The Concourse in San Francisco after moving to the fall in 2008. Special guests include Jamaica Dyer, Phoebe Gloeckner, Dean Haspiel, Batton Lash, Lark Pien, Dash Shaw and Jeff Smith. The show starts at 11 AM both days and runs until 7 PM on Saturday and 6 PM on Sunday. Admission is $10 for one day or $15 for both days. Comics retailers and 22009 Comic-Con attendees get in for free!

Saturday, October 17

Seattle, WA, 2 PM – 5 PM – Exurbia and Gothic Charm School signing

EXURBIA creators Scott Allie and Kevin McGovern continue their west coast tour with a stop at Comics Dungeon, where they will be joined by GOTHIC CHARM SCHOOL creators, writer Jillian Venters and artist Peter Venters.
