Black Adam solo film has been in the works at Warner Brothers for quite some time. Former wrestler and current movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been attached to the role since 2008, when it was still to be part of a Shazam! movie, and early in 2017 the project was split in two, with The Rock to star as Black Adam in his own solo film. Director Jaume Collet-Serra was announced for the film back in June of this year, and now The Rock has teased a release date of Wednesday, December 22, 2021 for the film, as well as what he’ll eventually look like on-screen.

On Instagram, the actor shared concept art for Black Adam by Jim Lee and Boss Logic, along with a note about his connection to superheroes, and the character in particular:

The Rock describes the character as “a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people.” The art by Lee and Boss Logic features Adam, with the face of The Rock, hovering over ruins, lightning crackling through the air. Adam sports a long black cape, which is somewhat in tatters. He also appears to have armor over his upper torso, with spiked shoulder pads. Otherwise the costume looks faithful to the suit the Wizard Shazam’s former champion has worn since DC’s New 52 relaunch of 2011.

Black Adam was expected to begin filming towards the end of this year, and The Rock’s social media post seems to be a good indication that things are moving forward well with the project. The solo film for the character will have some competition at the box office in December 2021, with the first sequel to James Cameron‘s Avatar currently scheduled for release the Friday before Black Adam‘s release date. Sherlock Holmes 3 is also currently scheduled for release on Wednesday the 22nd, though that seems likely to move.

  1. I’ve never been a fan of The Rock. I have never seen one of his movies and have never been interested in Pro Wrestling. On the other hand, I have always been impressed by Dwayne Johnson. In interviews and news items he has always struck me as a very upright gentleman. His letter to comic fandom above adds to my admiration. I’m putting this movie on my “see list”.
