Welcome to The Beat’s Wednesday Pulse!

This series will check in with what’s coming out in comic stores each and every week, offering insight to some of the most anticipated releases on the stands. In the end, we’re hoping to shine a spotlight on things you might not know you’d enjoy… and hope to offer a space for you to share what you are excited for this week.

Please note: our opinions are ours, and yours are yours – and while we encourage you to share your likes, this is not a forum to discourage others for enjoying what they enjoy. Comics are for everyone.

PREMIERE PUBLISHERS

KLAUS AND CRYING SNOWMAN #1
(BOOM! STUDIOS)

(Cover by Dan Mora)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // The best holiday tradition in comics returns in the next chapter of the epic Santa saga by visionary Grant Morrison and Eisner Award-nominated artist Dan Mora! Klaus has to help an absentee dad-turned-snowman make amends before melting away for good. And probably before he’s defeated by a pantheon of Norse Gods and their minions. All in a day’s work for Santa Claus.

THE BEAT SAYS // Morrison and Mora return for their now yearly visit with Santa through the eras. Think… well, think “Santa” meets “Conan” going through different traditions and mythologies, and you have Klaus.

AQUAMAN #43
(DC COMICS)

(Cover by Robson Rocha & Daniel Henriques)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // The tides turn for the Sea King with a new creative team! Star scribe Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain Marvel, Pretty Deadly) and red-hot artist Robson Rocha (TEEN TITANS, SUPERGIRL) take the rudder to steer Aquaman into uncharted waters. In the wake of “Drowned Earth,” an amnesiac Arthur washes ashore on a remote island, and ends up being cared for by a young woman named Callie, who’s just a little TOO curious for comfort. And as a lifetime of horror movies has taught us, there’s something strange going on in this island village. Aquaman needs to come to his senses quickly…or he might wind up sleeping with the fishes instead of chatting with them.

THE BEAT SAYS // This is it! We’ve had the opportunity to read this one quite a few weeks back, and it scratches all the right itches. A big, epic Aquaman story is about to start, from some amazing creators, and you’ll want to be on the ground floor.

FREEDOM FIGHTERS #1 (OF 12)
(DC COMICS)

(Cover by Eddy Barrows)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Line up for this all-new maxiseries set on Earth X, where the Nazis won World War II! Twenty years after invading and occupying America, Germany wiped out all metahuman resistance, including the original Freedom Fighters.

Fast-forward to the present day, and a new team of Freedom Fighters emerges to challenge the Nazi occupation once again. But if they’re to have any chance of victory, they’re going to need Uncle Sam-who disappeared after his original team was killed. The 12-part epic “Death of a Nation” storyline kicks off here!

THE BEAT SAYS // The blessing of hindsight comes from when we learn from our mistakes. Some folks don’t get the luxury of hindsight, because their whole lives are a continuing fight. This book seems pretty timely, is what we’re saying.

HARDCORE #1 (MR)
(IMAGE COMICS)

(Cover by Dan Panosian)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // SERIES PREMIERE! Imagine being able to take over the body of anyone on Earth. Sound crazy? Not for Agent Drake and the Hardcore Program. They can turn any person into a human drone to get to targets that normal soldiers can’t. Drake is the best soldier Hardcore has to offer. But when he gets stranded in a body with only 72 hours to discover who’s hijacked the Program, he’ll have to pull out all the stops against an enemy who could be literally anyone.

From the creative minds of ROBERT KIRKMAN and MARC SILVESTRI, and presented by ANDY DIGGLE (THIEF OF THIEVES, Losers) and ALESSANDRO VITTI (Secret Warriors), comes a new Skybound Original that shows you how to save the world without getting your hands dirty.

THE BEAT SAYS // A bit of a high octane body thriller from a gaggle of folks who are great with this kind of action story. Should be great!

SEASONS BEATINGS #1
(MARVEL COMICS)

(Cover by Marcos Martin)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And certainly the most eventful, as this cast of Marvel heroes soon find out as they engage in wacky hijinks to save the holiday season!

THE BEAT SAYS // Pretty simple really. A fun holiday story. And boy, do we feel like we could use some more positivity in our superhero comics these days.

FEATURED TITLES FROM OTHER PUBLISHERS

BETTY & VERONICA #1 (OF 5)
(ARCHIE COMICS)

(Cover by Sandra Lanz)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // BRAND NEW SERIES! “Senior Year, Pt. 1: Summer” – Betty and Veronica go where they’ve never gone before-their senior year of high school! Only one school year stands between them and freedom, but when the two BFFs think they’ll be attending the same college in the fall find out that their plans have changed, their senior year-and their friendship-is put to the test!

THE BEAT SAYS // Archie Comics have tackled a lot these days, but haven’t done a whole lot with “graduation”. It will definitely be interesting to see this version of events, before Riverdale gets around to theirs in a couple of years.

FLEM GN
(CONUNDRUM PRESS)

(Cover by Rebecca Rosen)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // When Julia meets a group of radical feminist performance artists in a Brussels squat, she is convinced by their political perspective and enchanted by their counter-cultural lifestyle. But has she found her tribe… or lost her mind? Flem, by newcomer Rebecca Rosen, takes the reader on a color-coded journey into the dark heart of the “other” Brussels.

THE BEAT SAYS // Conundrum Press is a company that doesn’t put out a lot of graphic novels, but when they do, they’re of particular note… and usually gone from the comics distributor the week of release. If you see this out in the wilds, give it a look. If you don’t, you might have to contact a prose book dealer and see if they have it.

JUDGE DREDD FINAL JUDGEMENT TP
(2000 AD / REBELLION)

(Cover by Jake Lynch)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // The thrilling and highly anticipated climax of the hit Dredd movie spin-off series including Urban Warfare and The Deep End.  Mega-City One, a seething metropolis built on the ruins of the old world, walled off from the irradiated wasteland of what used to be America. With eight hundred million people living within, only the harsh regime of the Judges can safeguard the lives of the citizens and keep the city from descending into chaos. The toughest of them all is Judge Dredd, a veteran that has survived and judged every lawbreaker that Mega-City One could throw at him. But this time Dredd goes up against an enemy unlike anything else he has encountered before. What can the law do against Death?

THE BEAT SAYS // Those who have been looking for a continuation of the Dredd movie can find their solace in these comics – albeit these are the last in the series. And they saved one of Dredd’s most feared villains for last… Judge Death.

LIVEWIRE #1
(Valiant Comics)

(Cover by Adam Pollina)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // ALL-NEW ONGOING SERIES! FOR THE FIRST TIME, LIVEWIRE TAKES CENTER STAGE! Accomplice. Mentor. Savior. And now, Enemy of the State. Seeking to protect other vulnerable super-powered psiots like herself, Livewire plunged the United States into a nationwide blackout with her technopathic abilities, causing untold devastation. After choosing the few over the many, she must now outrun the government she served – and those she once called allies. With the whole world hunting her, what kind of hero will Livewire be…or will she be one at all?

From rising star Vita Ayala (Supergirl) and astounding artists Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín (SECRET WEAPONS) comes an electrifying new series that will launch the Valiant Universe into a new age of champions!

THE BEAT SAYS // We’ve got a character and art team from Secret Weapons, one of the best superhero style stories of the past decade, along with a fresh new voice that has been taking the independent comic scene by storm. This will be another great opportunity for folks to either check out the Valiant Universe for the first time

WITCH HAMMER OGN
(AFTERSHOCK PRESS)

(Cover by Dalibor Talajic)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Witch. The word conjures images of hags in black robes and crooked hats, standing over cauldrons of bubbling brew. But witches are among us, and we do not realize it. They are our friends and neighbors. They are our family members. They are our idols.

And someone is murdering them.

A killer is stalking witches, hunting them down mercilessly. Agents Frontenac and Guinness are on the killer’s trail. But as they delve deeper into the hidden, magical world around them, they are haunted by a terrifying question. Is the killer doing the right thing?

THE BEAT SAYS // Aftershock is dipping it’s toe into the graphic novel market, but instead of heading in the direction of many publishers who are looking to get into the lucrative all ages market that has sprung up, they’re going towards the mega-popular European style oversized album story for adults – which is a format we’d really like to see catch on here in the Americas.

QUEEN OF KENOSHA GN (Animal Group) // From the publisher: “A coming of age tale, this is the first installment of the Thin Thinline Trilogy, the fiercely independent Nina Overstreet has an axe to grind. A talented singer-songwriter slogging her way through the burgeoning Greenwich Village folk music scene of 1963, the Queen of Kenosha, Wisconsin, realizes that standing on the cusp of stardom gets her little respect and barely a cup of coffee in New York City. It finally comes, but in a way she could have never imagined. A chance encounter with the mysterious Nick Ladd at a late-night gig spins her life in a different direction, one that becomes a daily balance between life and death, right and wrong. Nick recruits Nina to join him and a team of ex-FBI operatives in a clandestine agency to stop the establishment of the Fourth Reich by undercover Nazis in post-War America. It’s a cause Nina believes in, until she’s forced to compromise the very principles of fairness and patriotism she holds dear. As the body count mounts in pursuit of the Nazi ringleader, the evasive Alex, the stakes grow even higher for Nick and Nina.”

FUNNY GIRLS GUFFAWS GUTS GENDER IN CLASSIC AMER COMICS // From the publisher: “Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the medium was enjoyed equally by both sexes, and girls were the protagonists of some of the earliest, most successful, and most influential comics. In Funny Girls: Guffaws, Guts, and Gender in Classic American Comics, Michelle Ann Abate examines the important but long-overlooked cadre of young female protagonists in US comics during the first half of the twentieth century. She treats characters ranging from Little Orphan Annie and Nancy to Little Lulu, Little Audrey of the Harvey Girls, and Li’l Tomboy, a group that collectively forms a tradition of funny girls in American comics.”

  1. Good to read about Witch Hammer here as I’ve seen the cover, and it’s good to have info.
    Sounds promising.

That Matteo by Gibrat volume is out of my reach money-wise at the moment, but I can dream of just how nice it looks
