Welcome to The Beat’s Wednesday Pulse!

This series will check in with what’s coming out in comic stores each and every week, offering insight to some of the most anticipated releases on the stands. In the end, we’re hoping to shine a spotlight on things you might not know you’d enjoy… and hope to offer a space for you to share what you are excited for this week.

Please note: our opinions are ours, and yours are yours – and while we encourage you to share your likes, this is not a forum to discourage others for enjoying what they enjoy. Comics are for everyone.

PREMIERE PUBLISHERS

WYRD #1
(Dark Horse Comics)

(Cover by Antonio Fuso)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // There are problems, cases, too strange for US law enforcement to solve. Pitor Wyrd is the one who solves them-for a fee, of course. An unaging, invincible detective with a penchant for the strange, Wyrd is the one the government calls when things go very badly and very strange. This issue: Crimea. A failed attempt at recreating a certain US supersolider. A monster roaming the countryside. A trail of bodies.

THE BEAT SAYS // Writer Curt Pires always brings something strange and interesting to the table – which means this won’t be a typical X-Files style story. It will almost definitely be something far more surreal.

STAR TREK Q CONFLICT #1 (OF 6)
(IDW Publishing)

(Cover by David Messina)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // When a dispute between godlike beings threatens the galaxy, it will take all of Starfleet’s best captains to stop them. Join James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Kathryn Janeway, and Benjamin Sisko as they go head-to-head in a competition that will determine the fate of the Earth and beyond. Will they be able to emerge victorious, or will they be torn apart by The Q Conflict? A soon-to-be-classic six-part miniseries begins here! The crews of The Next Generation, The Original Series, Voyager, and Deep Space 9 come together to face their biggest challenge yet! Written by Star Trek: TNG: Mirror Broken scribes Scott & David Tipton! All the captains together for the first time!

THE BEAT SAYS // By all accounts, Scott & David Tipton have been doing remarkable things with all of the Star Trek from IDW – and now they’re tackling a crossover the likes of which have never been seen before.

PETER CANNON THUNDERBOLT #1
(Dynamite Entertainment)

(Cover by Sean Phillips)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // His level of genius is matched only by his heroics, and in humanity’s darkest hour, he’s the hero they need the most-alas, poor humanity.  Peter Cannon-the man known as Thunderbolt-is only too happy to leave civilization to face its end.  Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + the Divine) teams up with powerhouse artist Caspar Wijngaard (Doctor Aphra) as he returns to the superhero genre with a dark, humorous and relentless love song to the genre. Well, “Love Song” in a Leonard Cohen Love Song kind of way. Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt: saving a world he hates.

THE BEAT SAYS // It has been a good long while since Gillen has touched the superhero genre, and with an artistic direction that has been self described as “DREAM DADDY”, this take stands to be something interesting.

SHANGHAI RED TP
(Image Comics)

(Cover by Joshua Hixson)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Red is one of hundreds of people who were shanghaied out of Portland in the late 1800s. Drugged, kidnapped, and sold to a ship’s captain for $50, she wakes up on a boat headed out to sea for years, unable to escape or reveal who she is. Now, she’s coming back in a blood-soaked boat to find her family and track down the men responsible for stealing her life out from under her.

Eisner-nominated writer CHRISTOPHER SEBELA (High Crimes, Heartthrob, CROWDED), JOSHUA HIXSON (The Black Woods), and HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU (Felix & Macabber) bring you a tale of revenge, family, and identity that stretches from the deck of a ship outside Shanghai all the way to the bleak streets of-and secret tunnels beneath-Portland, Oregon. Collects SHANGHAI RED #1-5

THE BEAT SAYS // This was a book that seemed to get lost in the shuffle, and was one of our absolute favourites of the year. This series reads like John Wick by way of the late 1800s, but with a protagonist struggling with their own anger and identity. Harrowing and beautiful, this blood red beauty is something we’re going to be putting into people’s hands for a good long while.

ACTION COMICS #1007
(DC Comics)

(Cover by Steve Epting)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // The Kobra Cult conspiracy ensnares Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen, drawing the attention of the Man of Steel. But be careful, Superman-there’s more lurking in the shadows of Metropolis than just a snake cult.

THE BEAT SAYS // Since the start of his run on Action Comics, Bendis has been letting a group called Leviathan percolate. Here, things stop simmering as the heat turns up, leading to a big story later in the year that the writer will be teaming with Alex Maleev to bring to comic stands. If you want to get in at the ground floor of the next big DC story, you’ll want to look here.

FEATURED TITLES FROM OTHER PUBLISHERS

POWERS IN ACTION #1
(Action Lab)

(Cover by Art Baltazar)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Twenty-five years in the making, a bold new adventure awaits! Our heroes, Lynx and his sister, Ocelot, join the super team known as The Hero Squadron… and they are late for their first meeting. Maybe these delays are because of Super Villains! Oh no! Looks like our heroes may have work to do before they even join the team. Will these cat-heroes fit in with the members of the Hero Squadron? Join us for this new Super Hero Dimension of the Aw Yeah Universe told by famous cartoonist Art Baltazar!

THE BEAT SAYS // One of the co-creators behind Tiny Titans brings a brand new squad of characters to comics. Together and separately, Art and Franco have walked across this industry, leaving great books for all ages everywhere, and adding to that library of work just means there are more for kids to discover.

DEEP ROOTS TP VOL 01 (MR)
(Vault Comics)

(Cover by Val Rodrigues)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Roots, once suffocating under cement, tear through the streets of London to throttle buildings. Vegetable homunculi hold up banks with automatic weapons. There is a green and blooming world beyond our own, fighting back against the human pollutant. We will launch a rescue mission to this otherworld. But it is cruel and unknowable, and should we become tangled in its vines, more than cities will fall. From Dan Watters and Val Rodrigues comes a story of two worlds, of myth and man, of science and fiction, and the roots they share.

THE BEAT SAYS // A story about humanity vs nature, but with a great lyrical, mythical feel. This series was a surprise when we first read it, and continued to surprise right through to the end.

SUBMERGED GN VOL 01 (MR)
(Vault Comics)

(Cover by Lisa Sterle)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // On the night of the biggest storm in New York City history, Elysia Puente gets a call from her estranged little brother Angel, terrified and begging for help. When the call cuts out suddenly, despite the bad feelings between them, Ellie rushes into the night. Finding his broken phone in front of a barricaded subway station, Ellie follows echoes of her brother into the sinister darkness of the underground, desperate to find him before it’s too late.

THE BEAT SAYS // This story features a touch of Neverwhere while being completely its own thing. The sense of world building from Vita Ayala and Lisa Sterle is a beautiful thing to experience and brings you into the story in a gentle way, all while offering a gentle tension that pushes you forward.

TO DRINK & TO EAT HC VOL 01
(Lion Forge)

(Cover by Guillaume Long)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Hungry for help in the kitchen? Go from basic cook to master chef with Guillaume Long’s clever and charming lessons in French food. Cooking blogs and comics come together in To Drink and To Eat, the newest and most unique cookbook to add to your kitchen shelf.

THE BEAT SAYS // When we’re cooking, we tend to like having images to guide us along. Using the medium of comics is a great way to communicate the how’s and why’s of cooking. Looking forward to exploring this volume.

  1. Dan Watters has William Blake conversing/ guiding Lucifer in Lucifer, and now he has a story about Nature asserting itself on London? Got my interest, to see what can be made, and how, of such Blake material. Could be good.
