Dark Horse has been producing graphic novels continuing the story of The Legend of Korra for a few years now, but fans of the award-winning animated series haven’t heard new stories featuring the voices of lead characters Korra and Asami since the series ended in 2014. That changes next week, as Dark Horse has announced they will be hosting a live reading of the first chapter from The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars next Monday, April 6th, at 5:00 PM Eastern/2:00 PM Pacific. Voice actors Janet Varney (Korra) and Seychelle Gabriel (Asami) will reprise their fan-favorite roles for the reading, which will be streamed via Twitch.
Written by LoK co-creator Michael Dante Martino and illustrated by Irene Koh, in consultation with the series’s other co-creator, Bryan Konietzko, The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars picks up the story of the animated series where it left off, with Korra and Asami having returning to Republic City to face new threats to both the physical and spirit worlds. The story was released as a three-part series of graphic novels in 2017/2018, and collected in an oversized library edition hardcover last year.
In addition to watching the live reading, a digital excerpt of Turf Wars will be available for attendees so they can follow along, book-and-record-style. Viewers will also be able to submit questions for Varney and Gabriel, who will hold a Q&A following the reading. Dark Horse will also be holding a giveaway during the event for both the Turf Wars Library Edition hardcover, as well as all three volumes of the publisher’s second Legend of Korra graphic novel series, Ruins of the Empire.
As far as things publishers are doing to help provide entertainment for fans who are social distancing, this one is pretty cool, with appeal for comic and animation fans alike. This is the latest step Dark Horse has taken to help people stay entertained. Yesterday they announced the release of dozens of free comics via their website, from first issues of recent series like Bang! and Skulldigger + Skeleton Boy to full graphic novels for Hellboy and Empowered.
The live reading for The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One will take place next Monday, April 6th, at 5:00 PM Eastern/2:00 PM Pacific.
