Mo’ Hobbits, mo’ problems. Peter Jackson and Warner Brothers are being plagued by a perfect sh*tstorm of bad press mere weeks before the release of the first installment of The Hobbit trilogy. First came the news earlier this week that twenty-seven animals died on set under inhumane conditions and that countless more were mistreated during the filming. Then came accusations that premiere invitations to members of the press corps are being denied selectively due to negative coverage of the film (a charge Peter Jackson and Warner Brothers vehemently deny). And on top of all that, the Tolkien Estate Ltd, its trustees and News Corp-owned publisher HarperCollins are suing Warner Brothers over Hobbit and Lord of the Rings slot machines, citing that putting hobbitses in a gambling related setting is exploitative and upsetting to fans.
