Welcome back folks! For this Turkey-day appetizer edition of Studio Coffee Run, we’ve rounded up a handful of savory stories and tasty trailers. Hopefully you’ve prepared yourself for lots of comic-related content as Channing Tatum gears up for his The Maxx adaptation, Josh Trank reviews his 2015 Fantastic 4 movie and Matt Reeves announces another cast member for The Batman. Then, we check in on Brienne of Tarth’s ill-fated ex-boyfriend, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, as he moves to the production side of the industry, all with a few snack-sized headlines sprinkled along the way.
- Josh Trank took the time to review his Fant4stick movie (his words, not mine) on Letterboxd. Is it a review? Honestly, not really. Is it a nice final word on a director’s experience working on a movie that would become… well, Fant4stick? Yes! He laments on the high quality of the cast he worked with and wonders if the final product did them justice. He’s wishy washy on the final deliberation there but, in the end, claims this movie as part of himself.
- The final Purge movie gets more real by the day as it adds Will Patton (The Postman) and Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) to its cast. Who exactly they’ll be playing, like the already announced stars, is still unknown for the time being. What we do know, however, is this Blumhouse sequel will step out of the comfortable urban setting with a script from franchise vet, James DeMonaco.
Channing Tatum is headed to the ‘90s for production on his upcoming The Maxx adaptation
The latest comic to make its way to the silver screen is an Image cult classic: Sam Kieth’s The Maxx. This weekend saw the team-up between Channing Tatum and Roy Lee for the project, set to be produced by their companies, Free Association and Vertigo Entertainment.
In an effort to stay true to the original, Kieth himself will also be on board to produce. The comics creator, who got his start on a little comic called Sandman, was also one of Image’s progenitors. The Maxx was his first series to come out of that rebellious separation and also one of the publisher’s first. In the pages of The Maxx, a homeless man drifts between the real world and the alternate dimension known as the Outback. It’s there that this homeless man becomes the titular Maxx; protector of the Jungle Queen. From there, Kieth’s odd story found an audience that would carry it into an audio drama as well as an animated MTV series. No word yet on what exactly Tatum and Lee are doing with The Maxx in terms of what form it’ll take – but meetings with writers and filmmakers are going on now.
Matt Reeves reveals who’ll play Carmine Falcone across from Robert Bat-tinson
Apparently Twitter was the spot to drop low-key movie news this weekend as Batman director Matt Reeves casually revealed that John Torturro will appear as Gotham mobster Carmine Falcone.
Although some folks may recognize him as Transformer’s Agent Simmons, Torturro is a well-established capital A Actor. Over the years, he’s pocketed an Emmy for his work on USA’s Monk along with a handful of Golden Globe nominations and collaborations with Spike Lee and the Coen Brothers.
Falcone has only made a handful of comic appearances, but his resume is a strong one. He first hit the scene in ’86 with Batman: Year One, then in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s The Long Halloween. Ironically though, Falcone’s most recent appearance was his last (for now), as he was one of many victims of The War of Jokes and Riddles.
Torturro’s Falcone is complimented by Robert Pattinson as the broody bat boy himself, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dino as Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. These stars hit Gotham – and theaters – on June 25, 2021.
- In more DCU news, Dwayne Johnson continues to give fans a steady stream of Black Adam updates, this time teasing that his upcoming origin story will introduce the Justice Society of America, which – wow! That is a claim. He mentions the classic DC team somewhat offhandedly in an interview with ComicBook.com, after some friendly ribbing from Jumanji co-star Kevin Hart. In context, it’s hard to tell how serious he’s being, so time will tell if rumors of Hawkman and Stargirl appearances are true. Production begins in the summer of 2020, and it’s set to hit theaters December 21, 2021.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau pivots behind the camera with his new production company
After a celebrated portrayal (minus the ending) as Game of Thrones’ Jaime Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has announced that his next venture takes him behind the scenes. A Deadline exclusive reveals that he’s begun a production company called Ill Kippers Productions, with the help of writer Joe Derrick and Jeffrey Chassen.
Together, the trio is lining up scripted and unscripted works, focused primarily on U.S. and European audiences. Waldau tells Deadline that he’s confident in his cohorts and longtime collaborators: “This is a brand new journey for all three of us but we all share the same work ethic, drive and passion for storytelling.”
Happily, we already have concrete examples of what exactly that will look like. One of the company’s first productions will adapt Helene Dunbar’s YA novel, We are Lost and Found. It’s unclear whether this will head for small or large screens – but co-producer Julian Morris leans toward the latter.
Ill Kippers will also lurk into the non-fiction realm with a documentary about fan conventions, appropriately named CONS. After Game of Thrones’ San Diego Comic Con appearance (and lack thereof), along with Waldau’s own perspective from years of experience with fans, this project feels especially pointed.
- Meanwhile, Tyler Perry announced his next movie; a Netflix flick called A Fall From Grace. He tagged the streamer’s Strong Black Lead account, along with stars Crystal Fox (The Haves and the Have Nots), Phylicia Rashad (Creed), Bresha Webb (Meet the Blacks), and Cicely Tyson (How to Get Away with Murder). Per Netflix, here’s what we can expect from the upcoming thriller/drama: “centered around a divorced woman who feels restored by a new romance, secrets soon start to erode her short-lived joy.”
- On the other end of the streaming spectrum, M. Night Shyamalan will be spending some more time over at Apple, as season two of Servant got the greenlight. It’s the fifth of Apple TV+’s exclusive series to get the go ahead, but this one has yet to formally debut. Subscribers can binge the first three episodes beginning on Thanksgiving, with new episodes arriving each Friday for a 10 episode season. The series stars Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebbell; they play a couple in mourning as they deal with tragedy and the resulting hole its dug between them.

The mulitversal misadventures continue with the BBC’s Doctor Who season 12 trailer, marking the second for Jodie Whittaker’s portrayal of the chronological clinician. This time around, something resembling a robot is after the Doctor as her loyalty is called into question. See what all that means early next year when Doctor Who comes to small screens.
If, for whatever reason, there’s a Mandalorian-shaped hole in your heart that only a brick can fill, your odd request has been answered!
And, while we’re at it, we might as well check out the Rise of Skywalker special look. The movie itself hits theaters December 20 – but this retroactive view of how the franchise has curled up in our culture will have you wishing it was here already.
