Stacked Deck Press

Five titles from Stacked Deck Press are currently available on Hoopla. These are:

  • We’re Still Here: An All-Trans Comic Anthology
  • A Good Sport: A Graphic Memoir by Soizick Jaffre
  • We Belong: An All-Black/All-Queer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Comics Anthology
  • Come Out and Play: A Queer Sports Project
  • Ooops..I Just Catharted! Fifty Years of Cathartic Comics by Rupert Kinnard

In a quote emailed to Comics Beat, Stacked Deck Press Editor in Chief Tara Avery explained how the publisher’s comics found their way to Hoopla:

I was hoping to speak to Moni Barrette, librarian and founder of Creators Assemble, about library distribution at San Diego Comic-Con last year, but we kept missing each other. She did leave her card for me at the Prism Comics table, and I reached out to her a couple weeks later. She put me in contact with Eric Gladstone of Aggregate Ink, a service that provides digital editions of comics to library services such as Hoopla. He and I discussed the SDP catalog, and he made it possible for me to get set up on the Aggregate Ink platform… Aggregate Ink finalized its contract with Hoopla, and now these books are available at roughly 40,000 English-language libraries worldwide.

Avery also told The Beat how she selected the titles that were included:

We Belong and We’re Still Here are among my more popular titles and they’re also award winners. We Belong received a Kinnard Better Future Award, We’re Still Here won the Ignatz for Outstanding Anthology. Ooops…I Just Catharted! is practically made for libraries because it is a collection of a classic groundbreaking queer comic strip, and – no surprise – also won a Kinnard Award in 2025.

Come Out and Play is the most recent publication, and since sports comics aren’t the usual fare found at comic shops and bookstores, it might find some success with a library audience tuned into different things. This is true for A Good Sport as well, but the European flavor of it might appeal to library patrons outside the United States, which is one of Hoopla’s strengths.
