What do you consider to be the epitome of cool? Clearly, it’s a duck who likes pizza, skateboards, and arcades, right? Just released last week on May 9, Hippo Park/Astra Publishing House now has One Cool Duck: King of Cool #1 available for young readers grades 1 through 4. The comic is written and illustrated by Mike Petrik.

What’s cool, anyway? Skateboards, pizza, arcade games—and being kind! This buoyant young graphic chapter book introduces Duck and pals, kicking off a series that makes real-life friendship issues fun.

Duck is feeling pretty good about himself. He can flip on a skateboard, and he’s a great friend, too. Then Cat comes along and seems so cool, with his high scores on video games—but Cat also does some mean stuff nobody likes! Then Cat gets caught up a tree and needs help. In three short chapters, perfect for readers just gaining confidence, Duck and his pals show Cat that being cool includes helping others and not dissing your friends. Each character has a distinct way of speaking, and readers will love learning how to read and pronounce entertaining slang expression from the fifties and other “cool” eras.

Hippo Park graphic chapter books are ideal for beginning and newly independent readers, with approachable page counts, easy-to-follow paneling, and artwork that supports text comprehension.

The hardcover, 64-page book is the first in a new series of young reader graphic chapter books. Petrik shared in a statement:

“I was always a terrible reader. Especially back in school, reading always just seemed like a chore. It was homework.  Something that got in the way of me doing what I wanted to do with my time.  Why would I want to read this book when I can draw? Or go skateboarding?,” asks Mike Petrik, author-illustrator of ONE COOL DUCK (King of Cool #1).  “For kids like me, who were intimidated by text on a page, I can honestly say that comics rescued me. A grumpy orange cat, and a spoiled jerk kid with an imaginary tiger. But I guarantee I would have continued down that path of hating reading if I didn’t find Garfield at the Scholastic Book Fair at my school. I know I’m not alone on this one.”
