You know we love middle-grade graphic novels here at the Small Press Spotlight. This week we’re looking at two books based on nationally syndicated cartoonist Brian Anderson’s comic strip “Dog Eat Doug”: Sophie: Jurassic Bark and Sophie: Frankenstein’s Hound.

Debuting on October 15 from Marble Pressthese are the first two in a series for middle-grade readers and are “full of mini adventures, pop culture spoofs, sharp jokes, adorable illustrations, and a sneaky dose of heart.”

Anderson’s “Dog Eat Doug” comic strip debuted as a webcomic in 2004 and became nationally syndicated in 2005, appearing in newspapers such as The Chicago Tribune and MSN, and webcomic sites such as GoComics.com and Webcomics.com. Over the past 20 years “Dog Eat Doug” has grown to enjoy international readership, both through traditional newspapers and online.

The new Sophie graphic novel series continues to chronicle the hilarious adventures of chocolate lab Sophie and her new (human) baby brother Doug as they navigate life’s everyday trials together.

SOPHIE: FRANKENSTEIN’S HOUND

Sophie and Doug set off on more lively adventures, now joined by a gang of playful foster puppies and the family’s two new mysterious cats. Follow along on a dragon hunt, witness Sophie and Jack’s epic battle against the Ninja Socks, and brace yourself for the mischievous cat duo, Chewy and Equi, who might just be plotting to take over the world.
Anderson said in a statement:
“Taking a leap from newspaper strips to graphic novels was scary, but Sophie, my real life furbaby, and the amazing fosters I’ve met along the way, have inspired a whole new leash on storytelling. From the small panel to the grand page, Sophie’s world has exploded with new life. These graphic novels offer a deeper dive into the bond between humans and their rescue dogs.”
