It’s the big week! The one we’ve been planning for! San Diego Comic-Con is about to unfold and in one week’s time we’ll have gone through heck and back. I’m sure you have a few burning questions on your mind about this year’s event, and I’ll do my best to answer them here.

WILL YOU GET EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA AT THE SHOW? I’m not a doctor, but you have a good chance at this not happening. The current outbreak of Cyclosporiasis has had a few cases in San Diego, but it appears to be in line with typical numbers, at least according to Fox News. The national outbreak is reported to be linked to bagged lettuce distributed by Taylor Farms and served at Taco Bell and possibly other places. As obsessed we are with a parasitic case of the trots, outbreaks definitely spike in the summer. For now avoiding lettuce of unknown origin is probably a good idea if you don’t want to run into Comic-Con’s well-documented bathroom lines at horribly urgent times. If you’re like the Beat, a large portion of your pre-con diet consists of bagged salad, so this has been a buzzkill, but cooked vegetables are also good for you.

DO THE PEOPLE AT ESRI PUT UP HOTEL WRAPS JUST LIKE COMIC-CON? The answer is a surprising yes! ESRI, (which stands for Environmental Systems Research Institute, but no one seems to use it) is the conference for geospatial professionals and enthusiasts which takes place the weekend BEFORE San Diego Comic-Con. It just wrapped up on the 17th. It has been mentioned here at The Beat over the years because for a while it was believed to have a greater economic impact on San Diego than Comic-Con. That is no longer the case, although the 20,000 attendees did have a $60 million economic impact on the region, so they are generous spenders.
But what you really want to know about is their hotel wraps!
Threads user @bitspitter who is also a con volunteer, spent last week walking around town and he actually had pictures of the ERSI hotel wraps!

While these are not as eye catching as American Horror Story or The Rookie, for some reason the “Mapsters unite!” message is one that I find heart warming. It also explains part of that $60 million economic impact.
WILL THERE BE AN FX ACTIVATION IN FRONT OF THE HILTON? According to Kerry Dixon, no signs of one?
As far as we are aware this is what the Bayfront lawn will look like next week #SDCC pic.twitter.com/aAK2MoIWbU

This is pretty sad, as the FX activations have been world class experiences for years, among the very best at Comic-Con. Obviously they were expensive to put together and if there really is none this year, it’s another big flashing sign of Hollywood cutbacks. I’m going to wait until I’m on site Tuesday for the final verdict, but it really does seem that the glory days when every studio had a huge presence are long gone. Don’t worry there will still be a lot to do!
WILL THERE STILL BE THE KLINGON LIFESTYLE AND BALL-JOINTED DOLL PANELS? Yes there will! These two niche panels go back to the most fannish days of the con in the 90s, and I’m happy to see the traditions continue, although moved to different time slots.
I went over the entire panel schedule of the show to see which The Beat wanted to cover and there are nearly 1000 panels alone at SDCC 2026. Programming has been gradually spreading to the Marriott, the Omni and the Library. This does not include activities at booths, signings, screenings, games, activations, meet-ups and parties. THERE IS AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF STUFF TO DO AT THIS SHOW. It’s actually kind of mind boggling.
The thing I noticed looking at the panels before my brain gave out is that many of them are about breaking in, networking, pitching, writing, crowdfunding, how to, etc etc etc. It definitely reinforced the idea that networking for a job in media is really the reason a lot of people go to the show.
Of course, there are also many, many panels about comics – the usual publisher panels, guest spotlights, the Comic Arts Conference, topics wide and far. Movie stars may not be lining up for their Comic-Con panel any more, but everyone else is. It is truly astonishing what this event has become, and it continues to evolve.
WILL THERE BE COMIC-CON CHOCOLATE BARS? Yes! Apparently the Convention Center have been doing this for 10 years, but I never noticed before? Anyway, this year’s flavors are:
- Top Yum takes classic s’mores flavors to new heights with its blend of dark chocolate, caramelized cookie crunch, and toasted marshmallows.
- Mint Condition offers a premium chocolate experience, complete with milk chocolate, milk crumble, and mint chocolate ganache.
- Canyon Quest is a flavorful adventure of twists and turns, featuring dark chocolate, sea salt, sour cherries, pepitas, and sunflower seeds.
- Daybreaker brings a tropical, beachy vibe with white chocolate, coconut-curry ganache, curry powder, and toasted hazelnuts.
I would eat any of those. They will be available for sale at the Craft Chocolate Bar booth in Lobby 20 for $12 each.
WILL THERE BE DEMON SLAYER FLAVORED RAMEN? Yes again!
WILL THE BEAT HAVE A MEDIA ROOM AGAIN AND BE PUTTING TONS OF GREAT CONTENT UP ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL? Yes! Thanks to our wonderful partners, The Seven Galaxies Chronicles, so make sure to hit like and subscribe!
WILL I SURVIVE SDCC 2026? The jury is out.

I hope you survive the experience Heidi.
Note: I will not be at Comic Con this year. So if you are thinking of skipping a panel because you think I’ll be recording it, you will be sorry. Go to the panel!
