The SDCC ’22 Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel today announced – as expected – big plans from the House of Ideas this fall. Plans like Jason Aaron’s Avengers Assemble epic, the finale to Christopher Cantwell’s run on Iron Man, Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise, and the return of a Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur series.
Marvel’s Next Big Thing Panel was presided over by Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski, Executive Editor Nick Lowe, editors Darren Shan and Lauren Bisom, as well as creators Christopher Cantwell (Iron Man), Jonathan Hickman (X-Men), Ram V (Venom, Carnage), and Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty).
The biggest news from the Next Big Thing SDCC ’22 panel was Jason Aaron’s major Avengers event that brings together the goings on across all the disparate time periods and factions of Avengers that have appeared across his run for the epic…Avengers Assemble – the present day Avengers, the Avengers Forever and the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC. It all begins with November 30’s Bryan Hitch drawn Avengers Assemble: Alpha and will crossover between the Avengers and Avengers Forever titles.
The tease:
“From throughout time and the far corners of the Multiverse, the Mightiest Heroes of All the Earths are assembling as never before for a battle beyond all imagining. A war that will take us from the prehistoric beginnings of an Earth under assault by the greatest villains who’ve ever lived to the watchtower that stands at the dark heart of the all and the always, where an army of unprecedented evil now rises. The biggest Avengers saga in Marvel history begins now.”
Jason Aaron said,
“Four years of Avengers stories. Threads from really every major series I’ve worked on throughout my last decade and a half at Marvel, from Ghost Rider to Thor. It all leads to this. The biggest Avengers story I could possibly imagine. Featuring a cavalcade of characters from across creation. And I’m so deeply thrilled and honored that it all kicks off with an oversized Alpha issue that’s being drawn by the legendary Bryan Hitch, who I’m getting to work with here for the very first time.
“Avengers Assemble. Say the words like a prayer. It’s the only thing that can save you.”
Christopher Cantwell’s run on Iron Man ends with Iron Man #25, which is apparently shellhead’s 650th issue. It will be a special oversized issue with Angel Unzueta on art – and two backup shorts by other creative teams.
The tease:
“It’s Iron Man Day in New York City, but not everyone is ready to celebrate the ongoing legacy of Tony Stark — least of all him. But a sudden crisis will once again test Tony’s heroism and challenge his commitment to the role he has assumed for himself. Must there be an Iron Man?”
The special anniversary issue backup stories:
- A mystical tale of Iron Man seeking Thor in Niffleheim, by Murewa Ayodele and Dotun Akande
- A Madame Masque and Radioactive Man story from the past, by Kurt Busiek and Ben Dewey
Marvel also promise a teaser of what lies ahead within the pages of Iron Man #25. So get ready. November 16.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur are back! With a new #1 hitting your LCS in December. The new series will have Jordan Ifueko writing and Alba Glez as artist. Ken Lashley will provide the cover. Marvel promises this will be a “brand new era” for the title. Here’s hoping!
Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise, a new Doctor Strange four-issue miniseries written and drawn by Tradd Moore – who worked with Donny Cates on Silver Surfer: Black – begins November 23.
Marvel says,
“the four-issue limited series sees Doctor Strange awaken alone in a distant world not his own. Lost of purpose and surrounded by danger, the wandering sorcerer must explore this land of blades and mystery to unravel arcane secrets and escape the deadly horrors that lie in wait!”
