Hank Azaria was surreptitiously filmed in his role as Gargamel in the upcoming Smurfs movie, and as you can see, it is a chilling portrayal of ultimate evil that will scar our nightmares.
Actually, it is quite terrifying.
The Smurfs movie — based on the beloved characters of Belgian cartoonist Peyo — is planned for release next year and will be a 3D/CGI/Liveaction mish mash mosh. The director, Raja Gosnell, previously directed BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA, the two Scooby Doo movies and BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE, so in all fairness, he really knows how to take charge of filming brain-destroying pap.
I thought Harvey Pekar when I saw that picture. Evidently not, though.
They’ve been filming that right near my office. Haven’t seen Azaria yet, but now I know what to watch for.
What does this have to do with comics? This is almost as bad as all the “Lost” coverage.
Who is playing Azrael?
I’d buy him as Harvey Pekar, too.
More American Splendor.
“What does this have to do with comics?”
Er, ah, you see… The Smurfs is a comic.
The Smurfs were a world-famous comic strip/graphic novel series for decades before they arrived in the U.S. as a Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
They were illustrated by “Peyo” and his assistants.
Where the cartoon is generally moronic and group-thinky, the comic strips are pretty funny and irreverant.
Ah, understood. But I’d rather see an article about Green Lantern Corps.
Glad I’m not alone with the Harvey Pekar double-take
Jeffy, just think of the Smurfs as being Guardians of the Universe and you’ll be okay.
Raja Gosnell also gave us the underrated “Mystery Men.”
I honestly did think “American Splendor sequel” when I saw that photo…
Just think of the Smurfs as little Blue Meanies and “you know it’s gonna be alright”.
