Three years ago, Marvel debuted a new Savage Avengers title that featured Conan the Barbarian being incorporated into the Marvel Universe proper. The series, written throughout its run by Gerry Duggan, recently came to an end after 28 issues. However, it appears that we haven’t seen the last of the team as today the publisher announced a new relaunched Savage Avengers group from writer David Pepose and artist Carlos Magno. A teaser image illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli & David Curiel revealed that colorist Espen Grundetjern will also be involved on the interior art, but no additional creators for the series were named in the announcement.
Since transitioning from comics journalism at Newsarama to becoming a full-time comic writer, Pepose has been on the rise in the last few years working on acclaimed series such as Spencer & Locke and Scout’s Honor and winning a Ringo Award. While Pepose is making his Marvel debut, Magno has been on a number of high-profile projects in recent years including the Chip Zdarsky-written Invaders series and the recently-wrapped Kang the Conqueror miniseries with writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly.
This new team of Savage Avengers will consist of Conan the Barbarian, Daredevil (Elektra Natchios variety), Anti-Venom, Black Knight, Cloak & Dagger, and Weapon H, as they are pursued through the Hyborian Age by an evil Deathlok.
Here’s how the publisher describes the series:
Since his exile from the Hyborian Age, Conan the Barbarian has conquered the most dangerous foes the modern Marvel Universe has to offer — but what happens when this hard-edged Cimmerian finds himself on the run from the cybernetic soldier of the future known as Deathlok? Outgunned and outmatched, Conan must turn to an unlikely group of loners, berserkers and killers if he hopes to survive the night — but can these Savage Avengers defy Deathlok’s murderous manhunt, or will they become the next targets in the crosshairs of tomorrow?
Pepose expressed his excitement at making his Marvel Comics writing debut:
“Making my Marvel debut with SAVAGE AVENGERS is like getting drafted to the Yankees and then being told you also get to play for the Rangers on the weekend — not only do I get to write Conan the Barbarian, one of the most iconic characters in sword and sorcery, but I get to throw him into the wildest adventures imaginable alongside a brand-new crew of Marvel fan-favorites! Teaming up Conan with Daredevil, Anti-Venom, Weapon H, Black Knight, and Cloak and Dagger allows so much personality and potential to this series, and artist Carlos Magno delivers showstopper after showstopper as he brings these characters to life — I can’t wait for readers to see what sparks fly when Conan and company are pitted against the most dangerous Deathlok of them all. Get ready to experience an epic battle of Cyborg versus Cimmerian, because this May, only the Savage will survive…”
In the official press release, Magnos described working on the series as a “baptism of fire” and said that, “It’s like David Pepose and I are dealing with nitroglycerin”.
The first issue will feature a main cover by Leinil Francis Yu and a variant by Camuncoli. Look for Savage Avengers #1 to arrive in stores on Wednesday May 4, 2022.
The first run of Savage Avengers was better and more fun than it had any right to be. I think it’ll be tough to top that Conan-tours-the-Marvel-Universe series but this cast is so out there that I’m totally willing to give it a try. Weapon H? Sure, why not?
