SDCC and the city of San Diego have signed an agreement to keep the con in its birthplace through 2027, it was announced yesterday. The show was slated to stay through ’26 so this amounts to a one year extension but it’s still good news. And everyone was celebrating.

SD Mayor Todd Gloria made the announcement: “Comic-Con is part of San Diego’s identity, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that it will remain here through 2027. This event is not just a celebration of creativity and fandom – it’s a major economic driver for our city, supporting local businesses and showcasing San Diego on a global stage. We’re proud to continue this incredible partnership and look forward to welcoming fans from all over the world.”

Rip Rippetoe (yes) president and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center joined the celebration.  “Comic-Con is the most famous convention in the world and the largest event we host at the San Diego Convention Center. We never take it for granted. We appreciate the Comic-Con team and all our partners who contribute to a successful event year after year.”

SDCC’s David Glanzer was also joyful, while slipping in a bit of a warning.  “We are excited to stay in San Diego for the next few years, which is made possible, in large part, to the many hotels who offer competitive rates and meeting space. It is vitally important to maintain affordable hotel rates for the tens of thousands who visit San Diego for Comic-Con each summer and, while it came down to the wire, we are grateful for the additional hotels who came on board to allow for this agreement to be signed.”

Hotel rooms (of course) have become the main issue in negotiations to keep the show in San Diego. Last year, Glanzer warned that keeping hotel rooms affordable via large hotel blocks devoted to the show was essential to SDCC’s future. As we reported a little while ago, hotel prices outside that block are insanely expensive, so his warnings were well founded. Glanzer’s comment suggest that the hotels agreed to make enough rooms available, so definitely a happy ending…..for now.

Of course, as a decades long con-watcher, seeing all these glowing comments about SDCC from city officials is always nice to see. We can relax for a little while….at least until 2028.
