Last month, Marvel announced that Invincible Iron Man would kick off a new journey in the fall without Tony Stark at the helm. Instead, Riri Williams will don the iron suit. However, she won’t be taking the code name. Instead, as reported by Wired, Williams will call herself Ironheart.
According to series writer Brian Michael Bendis, the codename was decided upon because “Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some. Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole. Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story, you’ll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe’s suggestion.”
Riri Williams was originally introduced in the most recent All-New All-Different run of Invincible Iron Man, first appearing in issue 7 and then donning War Machine armor in issue 9. She is a 15 year old genius who takes it upon herself to craft an Iron Man suit while at M.I.T.. Her story begins this November with the re-numbered Invincible Iron Man #1, written by Bendis and drawn by Stefano Caselli.
Clever name.
Sounds like a Care Bear.
Great: more alternate variant covers, and less quality sequential story telling, but this time it is supposed to ‘matter’….
