ComicMix is reporting the death of artist Tom Artis:

Comics artist Tom Artis died of complications from diabetes today at his home in Springfield, Illinois.

Tom had been hospitalized off and on for the past several years. According to his friend, fellow artist Doug Rice, Tom had been in a hospice since the beginning of the year. His wife Kim and children, Duke and Hope, were there with him when he died.

Tom’s many credits included Judge Dredd, Aliens vs. Predator, Justice Society of America, She-Hulk, The Spectre, Green Arrow, and his own creation for DC Comics (with friend and writer Peter Gillis), Tailgunner Jo.

  1. Tom was such a unique person, so gifted and gentle. He frequently visited the art department at SCI (springfield college in illinois) and gave demos for my classes. He called me Sis, wore a hat and always had a smile. Thanks, Tom, for being such an inspiration to all of us. I’ll miss you. THOSE WHOM WE LOVE AND LOSE ARE NO LONGER WHERE THEY WERE BEFORE. THEY ARE NOW WHEREVER WE ARE. st. john chrysostom

  2. I was a temporary student of Tom’s. He taught me how to draw hands and feet. He was a really nice guy, even though I didn’t know him very well. I remember bumping into him in Litchfeild a while back and he still recognized me. We talked, little did I know that it would be the last time. I’ll miss him. Godspeed.

  3. I knew Artis back in the Army a long time ago. I have several of his sketchbooks — he went through so many, I wonder what happened to them all. They should be in a collection somehwere I regret now that I lost touch with him. He will be missed. I’m going to pull out my copy of Tailgunner Jo and revel in his artwork again.

  4. I met Tom back when he and Tim Conrad were doing shows, and they use to stay with my wife and I, when she made dinner for them. They always said anything other than pop-tarts and hot dogs was awesome. We’ll miss him , and as Tom said to my wife, ” There’s no such thing as unicorns, We simply don’t exsist.” Rest easy my friend, Bruce
