Dynamite has revealed Red Sonja/Barbarella, a crossover series teaming up the iconic redheaded barbarian with the similarly iconic French sci-fi heroine this November. Writer Homero Rios, and artist Diego Yapur, who previously worked together on Rome Eternal, will reunite on the comic, which will see the two women meeting unexpectedly across time and space while Barbarella pursues “a mysterious black mirror tied to her past,” and Sonja is trying to rescue an oracle “whose violent fate seems already written in prophecy”.
The book marks the creators’ first for Dynamite, although Yapur will provide a cover for August 5’s Vampirella vs. Red Sonja: Red City. Rios comments, “Writing Red Sonja and Barbarella together has been a thrill because they are both iconic, fearless, and larger than life. The goal from the start was to give readers a crossover that feels dangerous and worthy of both legends. One way or another, it’s going to be quite a ride.”
Barbarella was created by Jean-Claude Forest in 1962, and Dynamite acquired the rights in 2017, publishing several series since then, including a Dejah Thoris crossover by Leah Williams and Germán García in 2019. The character is still perhaps best-known for being portrayed in the 1968 film starring Jane Fonda, which remains the only screen version of her to date, despite reports of a TV show being planned in 2013, and a new film directed by Edgar Wright, starring Sydney Sweeney, in 2023.
Issue #1 will be released in November with covers by Yapur, Joseph Michael Linsner, and Collette Turner, as well as two photo covers featuring cosplayer IvyCosplay as each character, that you can check out below.
