Fans of The Orville, gird your loins. We’ve got a sneak peek at an all-new story featuring Captain Ed Mercer and crew and it looks a good’un. The Orville #3: The Word of Avis is a two-part series that will focus on a group of xenoanthropologists aboard a Union transport ship headed for interstellar space. The Orville comes to their rescue, towing the ship and crew to safety before their engines overload. It looks like the group was unknowingly (or so they say) headed into Krill space. If you are familiar with the TV series, you’ll know Krill space isn’t something to be trifled with.
The Krill are a species who are, shall we say, somewhat easily aggravated. As this issue is called The Word of Avis, we imagine that a run-in with the Krill is bound to happen. Avis is the deity the Krill worship, the one who demands the destruction of non-Krill peoples.
While the Union transport ship appears to be a benign actor, Captain Ed isn’t so sure he can trust them. As you’ll see in the preview pages below, he instructs Lt. Alara to keep a watchful eye on their new guests.
The first arc of The Orville grounded us between seasons one and two of the massively popular show from creator Seth MacFarlane. The four-issue series was set after the events of season one which saw Captain Ed reeling from the rejection of his First Officer and former wife, Kelly Grayson. Mercer sought to rekindle their romance, but Grayson believes the two are better off as friends.
Series showrunner David A. Goodman is back as the writer for this new arc which looks to reference characters from an unnamed episode(s) from Season 1 or 2, at least according to an interview for TrekMovie.com. So keep a watchful eye, all you Orville sleuths out there.
As we’ve come to anticipate from the crew of the Orville, it looks like we can expect some comedy, action and those heartwarming moments that make us go, “Oh my, is this cold dead shell of a heart actually capable of feeling?” Check out an exclusive preview of The Orville #3: The Word of Avis, Part 1, below.

When the Orville detects a Union transport headed straight for Krill territory, they hail them and receive no response. Forced to intercept, the Orville is soon playing host to a group of seemingly hapless xenoanthropologists—including an old acquaintance of John’s. But not everything is as it seems.
