Following last week’s reveal of New Pokemon Snap, the Pokémon YouTube channel shared a first look at Pokémon Unite. The video describes the new title as “the first strategic team-based Pokémon battle game.” In other words, it’s a MOBA, not unlike popular games like League of Legends and Dota. Pokémon Unite is a free-to-start title for Nintendo Switch and mobile devices and supports cross-platform play. You can view the trailer for Pokémon Unite (or, as it really should have been named, PokeMOBA) below.

You can watch the presentation in its entirety here.

The title’s absence on PC is a bit surprising since it restricts the potential player base. Many people play MOBAs on computers, and a mouse and keyboard are generally considered the ideal way to play games of that genre. Pokémon TCG is available on PC, so the Pokémon Company doesn’t seem opposed to the platform completely. Maybe a PC release will be announced at a later date.

Pokémon Unite gameplay

Pokémon Unite is developed by Tencent, the multinational conglomerate that’s quietly one of the biggest forces in video games. It’s largely aimed at Eastern audiences, where mobile games and MOBAs are especially popular. Even so, the Pokémon brand holds a lot of sway everywhere, so this game looks like a guaranteed hit. Let’s just hope the microtransactions aren’t too predatory.

Pokémon Unite is in development now, with a release date to be announced.
