Sony just aired its latest State of Play presentation to spotlight upcoming games coming to PlayStation. The event was mostly focused on third-party titles and games coming to the PlayStation VR 2, so we didn’t get an update on God of War or Naughty Dog‘s next project. But, thanks to partnerships with publishers like Capcom and Square Enix, there was no shortage of big announcements. Let’s run through the highlights of the June 2022 State of Play.
Resident Evil 4 Remake (with VR support)
The announcement of the long awaited Resident Evil 4 Remake kicked off June’s State of Play. The recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 & 3 were extremely well-received, and Resident Evil 4 is considered by many to be the best game in the series, so there’s been a lot of anticipation for this. The game will support PlayStation VR 2, which isn’t a huge surprise since there’s already an adaption of the game for the Oculus Quest. But Capcom revealed that last year’s Resident Evil Village will also get VR support. The ability to play all of Resident Evil: Biohazard in virtual reality was an early highlight of the original PlayStation VR, so it’s great to see the series will also have a presence on PSVR2. Resident Evil 4 Remake is set to release on March 24, 2023.
Horizon Call of the Mountain and more games for PlayStation VR 2
The only first-party title Sony showed off at the June State of Play was Horizon Call of the Mountain, a spinoff of the Horizon series made for PlayStation VR 2. The trailer shows the protagonist traveling across the world’s diverse environments, riding and battling robot dinosaurs that populate them. Still unclear, though, is if the game is a PSVR2 launch title and even when the PlayStation VR 2 will release. Guerilla Games also announced that a big update for Horizon Forbidden West is available now, containing New Game +, Ultra Hard Mode, transmog and respec features, and more.
In addition to giving more information on Call of the Mountain, Sony announced two notable third-party games coming to PlayStation VR 2, The Walking Dead: Sinners & Saints Chapter 2: Retribution, and a virtual reality version of No Man’s Sky.
Calisto Protocol
Today’s State of Play featured a new trailer for Calisto Protocol, a spiritual successor to the Dead Space series from some of its original developers. Going by the trailer, the game really leans into Dead Space’s sci-fi horror roots. The game is set to release on December 2. Surely the developers are hoping to avoid what looks like a glut of games releasing in 2023, so hopefully they can hit that date.
Street Fighter 6
The last Capcom title revealed at the June State of Play was Street Fighter 6, the latest entry in the well-known fighting game series. The trailer revealed two brand-new modes to the series: World Tour, an “immersive single-player story experience,” and Battle Hub, which will “further expand the scope of player communication and engagement.” Street Fighter 6 is scheduled for 2023.
Final Fantasy XVI
The showcase ended with something many have been waiting for: a new trailer for the latest entry in the Final Fantasy series. The video for Final Fantasy XVI was more tone-setting than informative, feeling very Game of Thrones. Like many other games shown off at today’s showcase, the game is scheduled for 2023.
