The Fountain Bookshop in Washington Heights, Manhattan, is hosting a talk with Flow writer Paula Sevenbergen this Friday, May 15. Sevenbergen will discuss how the horror graphic novel, created with Claudia Balboni, reflects public discourse in the United States about even acknowledging young girls going through menstruation, and the ensuing “guilt, shame, bullying, and the horror and wonder of the human body.”
Flow, which was published by Mad Cave last year before releasing in trade paperback in March, tells the story of Dara, a naive, homeschooled girl who experienced her first period while at a camp, and believed she could only end her “curse” by doing everything three other girls told her to. Ten years later, these three bullies now find themselves actually cursed, and go on the hunt for Dara, believing she’s the one responsible.
The talk will be held from 6 to 7pm, and there will be a signing and reading of the book too. Tickets cost $5, though there are limited free community tickets available, on a first-come, first-served basis. The bookshop is located at 803 West 187th Street, between Fort Washington and Pinehurst Avenue.
