If the world is just a stage and all the people merely players, where does that leave Greg, Wirt and Beatrice when they stumble into a ghostly theater town? To answer that question, this August, BOOM! Studios will launch Over the Garden Wall: Soulful Symphonies, a new five-issue mini-series based in the same universe as the Emmy-nominated Cartoon Network show created by Patrick McHaleSoulful Symphonies will be written by Birdie Willis and illustrated by Rowan MacColl.

“The thing I liked best about writing this particular Over the Garden Wall story is that it speaks to my inner nerdy theater kid,” Willis said in a statement. “Certain elements of the show remind me of a play – narration, songs, opening and closing title cards like curtains – what better way to celebrate than to put Wirt and Greg and Beatrice in a theatrical setting?”

MacColl added, “When I was younger, I was a big nerd that loved listening to show tunes while drawing my comics. Working on Soulful Symphonieshas been such a fun experience because of this: I get to combine my esoteric love of musicals and comics in one joyful medley that I can’t wait for everyone to hear (or, uh, read).”

Over the Garden Wall: Soulful Symphonies follows Greg, Wirt and Beatrice at a point in their journey where they are all ready for a break from the danger and excitement of The Unknown. When they stumble upon a quaint, but creepily quiet town full of theaters and stages but no players or musicians, they encounter a young woman who offers the two half-brothers the opportunity to play at her family theater, as well as a place to stay. Greg and Wirt decide to audition for the production, but there are questions that need answering. Who are the three stage sisters running the show? Where are all the townspeople?

Although Over the Garden Wall ran for just 10 episodes in 2014, the property has experienced a new life through comics published by BOOM! Studios’ KaBOOM! imprint for middle grade and younger readers. This new adventure is the latest in a line of stories starring Greg, Wirt and their talking bird friend Beatrice and from the sounds of it, it will appeal to old fans and new.

“Greg and Wirt literally take center stage in this fun and frightening exploration of the highs and lows of being a performing artist,” said Matthew Levine, editor, BOOM! Studios. “Birdie and Rowan have a lot of surprises in store for Over the Garden Wall fans and you can bet your money on some incredible song and dance numbers.”
