Anyone who follows the direct market will tell you that Vault Comics is one of the coolest publishers around right now. And right after mentioning Vault, many will mention cartoonist Natasha Alterici’s Heathen as a prime example of why the publisher has so much heat. And it looks like both Vault’s and Heathen‘s reputations have paid off, as it was announced today that Constantin Film and Prime Universe have optioned Heathen for film.
Per Deadline, the script for Heathen will be written by Kerry Williamson, who has also written the screenplay for Alex Cross, based off writer James Patterson’s popular series of mystery novels. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer and Prime Universe Films’ Adrian Askarieh will co-produce the film with F.J. DeSanto. Constantin is perhaps best known as the company behind several Mortal Instruments adaptations.
Heathen follows a young Viking warrior named Aydis, who is intent on ending the patriarchal and oppressive reign of the god-king Odin. Alterici said of Heathen‘s option that:
“The entire Heathen team and I are incredibly excited about adapting my little lesbian viking comic for film, especially with a kindred spirit like Kerry writing it. I’ve been a film fanatic for longer than I’ve been a comics fans, and that my working in one format would lead to another is nothing less than a dream come true.”
