MoCCA will be presenting an exhibit to tie in with Stan Lee’s appearance at the NY Comic-Con, curated by Peter Sanderson. They are still looking for a few key pieces — see the end of the PR:

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) today outlined details for its “Stan Lee: A Retrospectiveâ€? exhibition honoring the famed comics creator and industry pioneer. Details included a call for sponsors and donors from Peter Sanderson, the comics scholar who is serving as Guest Curator for this exhibit, and MoCCA President Ken Wong. MoCCA’s “Stan Lee: A Retrospectiveâ€? exhibition is sponsored in part by Reed Exhibitions and scheduled to open at the MoCCA on February 23, 2007, to coincide with Stan Lee’s scheduled appearance as a Special Guest at Reed’s New York Comic-Con (www.newyorkcomic-con.com) being held at the Javits Convention Center that weekend. The exhibit will remain on view at the museum through July 3, 2007.

MoCCA’s “Stan Lee: A Retrospectiveâ€? exhibition will include examples of Lee’s early work in comics, address Lee’s crucial role in the famed “Marvel Revolutionâ€? (including aspects such as the “Marvel styleâ€? of writing, the cultivation of a “Merry Marvel Marching Societyâ€? fanbase, and of course, Lee’s role as co-creator of now world-famous characters such as The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Thor, Dr. Strange, Daredevil, and more) that took place during what has since become known as the Silver Age of superhero comics, and remind viewers of the ever-pioneering work that Lee is still doing today through recent projects at DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and POW! Entertainment.

Stan Lee, himself, is expected to be at the MoCCA on Friday night, February 23rd, for an Invitation-Only Opening Night Reception for “Stan Lee: A Retrospectiveâ€? Exhibition Sponsors & VIPs who help underwrite costs associated with mounting this ambitious and groundbreaking show – described by Wong as the first MoCCA exhibition devoted to a comics writer rather than an artist — that is, a comics creator who is not (also) an illustrator. Invitations to this exclusive Opening Night Reception (among other Exhibition Sponsor benefits) can be secured at Sponsorship levels starting as low as $500.

Although dozens of pieces of original comics artwork, artifacts and other exhibition elements have already been solicited and/or secured, exhibition organizers are still seeking several key pieces (especially prototypical, unusual or otherwise notable examples of Stan Lee’s plotting, dialogue, writing, editing, promotional and other contributions to the comics field and industry) and would love to hear from collectors willing to donate (or at least loan) artwork to the museum for use in this exhibition. Major donations can be counted as part of Exhibition Sponsorship packages. Those interested in getting involved in MoCCA’s “Stan Lee: A Retrospectiveâ€? exhibition as Sponsors, Donors, Lenders or Volunteers should contact Ken Wong by e-mail ([email protected]).
