deathofwolverine2

by Jason Enright

September is always an interesting month because DC does its big line-wide event with crazy covers and Marvel has to find a way to compete. The answer this year was Death of Wolverine, which shipped two issues this month and landed the number 1 and number 2 spots. DC still won overall market share, but Marvel still managed to make a few headlines themselves and capture those top two spots. Beyond those books, there is a lot of standard attrition this month and a lot of books ramping up for AXIS which is likely to lead into several new series and rebooted series over the next few months. Below is a breakdown of some of this month’s stats which includes a rise in the number of $4.99 books, which is very interesting.

79 books in total
11 double shipped books
5 X-Men books (7 if you count X-Factor and X-Force)
7 Avengers books (8 if you count the Ultimates)
2 Annuals
4 Original Sin and Original Sin Tie-In books

2 titles over 100,000 copies
2 titles between 75,000 and 100,000 copies
13 titles between 50,000 and 75,000 copies
27 titles between 25,000 and 50,000 copies
35 titles under 25,000
14 $4.99 books
61 $3.99 books
4 $2.99 books

Thanks as always to ICV2.com and Milton Griepp for their permission to use these figures.

What does it take to give Wolverine the best sales he has had in years? You just have to kill him. This is going to be a 4 part series, and the first two issues bring in Marvel’s best sales this month. This is a 4 issue series split over 2 months and it will be interesting to see if the final issue (where Wolverine actually dies) gets a big sales spike like issue 1 did.

Spider-Man is settling down a bit after its big launch and Original Sin Tie-In issues, but with Spider-Verse right around the corner, it should get another sales boost soon.

7. Original Sin

09/14 Original Sin #8 - 90,478 ( -0.9%)

Original Sin stayed remarkably stable around 90k for its entire run and its tie-ins boosted a lot of other books. People say they hate events, but these books bring in a lot of money for Marvel and boost the whole line, so it is very clear why Marvel keeps doing them.

Superior Spider-man has returned for Spider-Verse and the numbers are falling a little more quickly than his previous run. This title will go away again next month as it is absorbed back into Spider-Verse.

Issue 25 was an Original Sin Tie-In and had a S.H.I.E.L.D. variant which gave it a nice sales boost, but then issue 26 fell back down to where the sales would have been before Original Sin. It will be interesting to see if it falls below 50k and how long it stays there.

The second Original Sin Tie-In issue drops 5k issues but it still stays around 55k. As the fanfare of the movie dies down, I wonder if the series will continue to be able to support these sales numbers and all the spin-off series. There is also an upcoming crossover event with the X books that should boost sales for both series.

The latest Deadpool Vs. book brings Hawkeye into the fold. It debuts slightly better than where Deadpool vs. X-Force ended but not as good as high as the last two series debuted. I am really interested to see how long they can get money out of the Deadpool cash cow with all these spin-offs.

Even with DC winning the month overall, Marvel did quite well for itself this month. Death of Wolverine is doing well and AXIS and Spider-verse are right around the corner. Some of their prologue books are already doing quite well. There are some books near the bottom that are on the edge of cancellation but there are plenty of opportunities on the horizon for relaunches after these events wrap up.

One interesting thing to note is that many of the single character series that started as part of Marvel Now are falling into the low 20k range pretty quickly (Cyclops, Storm, She-Hulk, Punisher and a few others). So my questions for you readers are: Do you think that focusing on these characters is a misstep? Do these characters just not have what it takes to hold a solo title, or do you think that perhaps 22k is just what a book like Cyclops is likely to sell? What do other series like Hawkeye, Daredevil, and Ms. Marvel do differently that helps them stay above 30k?

Next month we’ll be looking at Axis, more Death of Wolverine and the new Thor series, which are all expected to deliver high sales.

Until next time, keep reading comics!

  1. Historically, none of the X-men except for Wolverine have been able to headline a solo series for very long, so it’s not surprising stuff like Cyclops and Storm are dropping off. Also didn’t help that Cyclops was hyped up with a major creator that quickly left the book. Same goes for Moon Knight starting with Warren Ellis and Uncanny Avengers starting with John Cassaday only to have those handed over after a handful of issues.

Punisher has an excellent writer/artist team right now so this could just be one of those cases like Thor: The Mighty Avenger where a quality book just doesn’t catch on for whatever reason.

And is sub-20k physical sales still the cancellation threshold? The companies don’t release digital sales info but piecing together different news sources says digital sales currently tend to be anywhere from 10%-25% or more of print sales.

  2. Hi Johnny,

Great question regarding the cancellation threshold. There is no official number where you fall below and you get axed, but it seems from looking at this data over the past few years that if a book hits 20k, cancellation talks start happening, I would imagine that to cover the cost to produce a monthly book and break even, a Marvel series probably needs to sell 15k. So as a book reaches 20k, the company probably says to the creator “hey take a few months to wrap up your story and get enough issues for one more trade collection” That way if a book is currently selling 20k, by the time it wraps up in 2 to 4 months time, it is still slightly above 15k when it ends and is still slightly profitable. Of course that is my only speculation just based off my own knowledge of the costs of printing, distributing and creating books and some experts I’ve talked to. I don’t have any actual inside info on how Marvel makes these decisions. There could be other factors too like is that character going to be featured in other marvel properties and they want them to stay visible, is that character making them more money from licensing, etc.

Digital is estimated to be about 10-25% but without digital numbers we really have no idea. When we see these numbers above we are only seeing monthly sales to comic stores. We do not see digital or graphic novel sales. We do not see what is actually bought by customers, just what stores order. So the speculation above is my estimate at the numbers we do consistently see and the trends I can identify from this data. Until we can somehow convince publishers to release regular digital sales data, we really have no idea.

  3. Thanks for running the numbers, Jason. Always a fun and informative read.

    A few thoughts:
I’m with Johnny, the loss of high profile creators after a few issues is realllllly not helping sales. That, combined with frequent relaunches, is making me switch to trade-waiting on more and more books.

re: Original Sin/crossovers boosting sales – i’d be curious, if you had a chance, to see how the various marvel event books have sold, relative to each other. We are now at two events per year, is this sustainable or a hail mary?

Avengers World: can’t really see it being too long for this world. It seemed to be showcasing the Hickman Avengers cast in non-Hickman stories. With all the changes to the team (with the 8 month time jump), I can’t imagine there’s much point to its continued existence.

X-Men, Amazing X-Men: just put these books out of their misery. Both only existed because Marvel briefly had a few big name creators do a few issues. They are now just chugging along, doing bad stories with no-name creators.

  4. So… Rocket Raccoon now sells better than The Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Daredevil. WHO would have EVER guessed that would happen?! :)

She-Hulk, Storm – Marvel will never learn. When you have a second tier title like this the #1 thing you don’t do is go and put in a fill-in artist within the first four issues. People are still trying to decide if they’re sticking around or not. The artist on the two part fill-in for She-Hulk scared a ton of people away, and I didn’t even pick up the third issue of Storm, because of the fill-in. But, unlike others who just dropped the titles, I continued to pick them up post fill-ins.

  5. Zach,

Great question about the events. I was intrigued by it, so i whipped this up on my lunch break.

First off comparing original Sin 1 to a bunch of other Marvel Avengers events.

    05/06 Civil War #1 – 260,706 (-43.6%)
    04/08 Secret Inv. #1 – 250,213 (-41.2%)
    01/10 Siege #1 – 108,484 ( 36.0%)
    04/11 Fear Itself #1 – 128,595 ( 14.3%)
    03/12 Av vs. X-Men #1 – 203,181 (-27.6%)
    03/13 Age of Ultron #1- 174,952 (-16.0%)
    08/13 Infinity #1 – 205,819 (-28.6%)

    05/14 Original Sin #1 – 147,045

Then comparing the last issue of original sin to a bunch of different Marvel Avengers events’ last issues.

    01/07 Civil War #7 – 265,886 (-66.0%)
    12/08 Secret Inv. #8 – 152,408 (-40.6%)
    05/10 Siege #4 – 113,752 (-20.0%)
    08/11 Fear Itself #7 – 95,599 ( -5.4%)
    08/12 Av vs. X-Men #12– 171,452 (-47.2%)
    03/13 Age of Ultron#10- 110,497 (-18.4%)
    08/13 Infinity #6 – 100,292 ( -9.8%)

    05/14 Original Sin #8 – 90,478

Then this is the Difference between First and last issue for each event.

    Original Sin (-38.5%)
    Infinity (-51.3%)
    Age of Ultron (-36.6%)
    AVX (-15.6%)
    Fear itself (-25.7%)
    Siege (4.9%)
    Secret invasion (-39.1%)
    Civil War (2.0%)

What do we learn here? Well Original Sin #1 sold worse than everything but Siege and Fear itself. The final Original Sin however did sell worse than all the other events. When you look at the drop off, you see that most events lose between 30% and 50% from start to finish, and Original Sin fell right in the middle.

Hard to tell if this is due to Event fatigue or just lower interest in Original Sin, but I’ll run something like this for Axis #1 and we can see where it falls compared to these other events.

    Thanks for the question!

  6. The $3.99 price point doesn’t seem to affect sales to any noticeable level. People buy events and series that “matter” and not much else. I skip the events and just follow the few characters I like in their own series.

She Hulk looks like it’s going to get relaunched maybe. In today’s Axel column at CBR, Alonso discusses the series. I’m sure it will be $3.99.

  7. I want to read more Marvel because I love the characters but it seems more and more that they just get a writer who is an indie favorite or a television writer or a comedian and say “Do whatever you want with our characters!” Fill-in artists are an issue for me as well, not so much that they’re fill in issues but if Marvel is promoting a particular book because Ed McGuiness is on art and he’s gone after three issues and his replacement looks nothing like his art, I don’t buy it.

  8. Here’s one simple (possible) answer to your question “Why do some books starring solo characters sell above 30K while other don’t?”:

    PRICE!!

Cyclops, Storm, and Punisher are all $4 books. Meanwhile, Ms Marvel is a $3 book, and — until recently — Daredevil and Hawkeye were, too!

(Now, admittedly, She-Hulk has been selling under 30K *despite* being a $3 book, but there’s gotta be an exception to every rule… right?)

  9. Geez, what’s the point?..Marvel and DC are pretty much over, just backdraft for the movies. I wonder why there’s any comments at all sometimes. These books only exist to suck money out of wallets and keep mortgages and royalties going for whoever is left willing to pay for it. It’s a racket within a sea of overly recycled ideas. Do creators even stay on books very long anymore to care. Look at the state of all the characters now, flipped & reflipped into he costume versions of Bitcoins.

When’s the Independent’s list coming? Thats the more interesting story.

  10. As far as price, Thor, Spider-Man, Rocket Raccoon, Cap, etc are all $4. It’s not price, it’s a combo of story and character that sells books. Unfortunately, some characters we like simply don’t latch on with other audiences.

  11. I wonder how low the Bendis creator-owned books can go before they aren’t profitable?

But, yes, I probably agree with the others that say the 20K “danger” line probably needs to be reduced with everything (except Ms. Marvel it seems) going to $3.99 as of January. Talks probably start at 20K, but if Invaders is still going at 17K, I’m thinking 15-16 is the new 20 (as it’s the same amount of money…)

  12. I am still picking up Miracleman because I’m eager to read Gaiman and Buckinghams new stories. While the Moore stories don’t hold up as well as they did when they first came out in the 1980’s, I enjoy all the extras Marvel is putting in each issue (the original pencil/ink art – old school Mick Angelo comics, etc). So even though I have original copies of all the Eclipse books, all the Warrior issues and copies of the Eclipse Trade paperbacks, these new printings are unique and I’m glad Marvel are doing them.

I imagine sales will go up once brand new stories are produced.

  13. Not sure I agree about the price point mattering much, comics are fairly inelastic in that the audience will easily support a price raise, but doesn’t respond very enthusiastic to lower prices. Already 14 Marvel comics were 4.99 in September and I don’t see that negatively affecting sales at all; and people don’t flock to She-Hulk or Ms. Marvel in droves (although both sell respectably).

Personally I’m a lapsed Marvel reader who mainly reads indies now, but every now and then I’ll check out the wackier stuff Marvel does. Hawkeye, Superior Foes, She-Hulk; things with a strong creative voice. Maybe I’m part of a substantial audience who think similarly? It’ll be interesting to see how Lemire’s Hawkeye does; I got a feeling a lot of the audience was outsiders checking in for one series, not so much people craving to see Hawkeye in anything. But I’m happy to be proven wrong. :)

  14. I’m still reading Miracleman month-to-month (since I’ve never read it before and wanted to try it out as a monthly rather than trades), but I despise the “bonus materials,” which lately have been pencils (an inferior copy of the art for the story I just read) and classic reprints (unreadable Golden Age stories that aren’t even of historical interest), bumping the price up to $4.99. I’d at rather have some additional editorial content – essays, annotations, SOMETHING worthwhile rather than a bunch of filler.

  15. I hope some people are happy that X-Factor might be ending, since certain people have seemed to be rooting for its’ demise for months. >.>

If X-Factor does go, I’ll have lost quite a few titles from Marvel this year. New Warriors, T-Bolts, X-Factor, Avengers Undercover and Mighty Avengers. And yes, I know Mighty is getting rebooted but I’ve already been turned off by the way Captain Falcon has been written in “Axis” so I don’t think I’ll be getting the relaunch of that one. Speaking of which, I probably won’t get the Captain Falcon relaunch either so I guess that’s six titles.

  16. $4.99 for a reprint???? hahaha… You’ve been suckered. Give it a year. These issues will be in the $1 bins.

  17. I love how people are saying “Cancel those third-string X-books”, even though those titles are still outselling historical titles like Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, FF, AND outselling nu-wave titles like Inhuman, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Loki, etc.

But, no, cancel those C-level X-titles with the C-level creators even though they outsell the majority of Marvel’s lineup. Sure, I’m sure Marvel’s gonna get right on that.
