Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please adress your complaints to my «it’s-always-weird-for-most-french-people-to-see-that-many-US-flags-when-we-travel-because-we-are-ashamed-of-our-own, mostly-a-symbol-of-racism-and-intolerance» country.

First, please excuse me again for the lateness of this column. As it was finished, a leak of the Marvel line-up post Civil War 2 appeared. Even if it’s missing some titles who, obviously, will still be part of the line-up (like Spider-Man/Deadpool or X-Men and Inhumans series), it confirms some of the cancellations who seemed inevitable and, surprisingly, again and again, relauches of titles that were already relaunched less than 1 year ago. This seems like it will happen now every 9 months, after each event. That’s a pity, as it makes even more difficult to follow the evolution of one title sales, constantly interrupted by relaunches and tie-ins. TPB sales updates will be back next month.

Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.

Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.

2- CIVIL WAR 2 LTD ($5)

05/16- Civil War II #0 - 177,283

Introductory chapter of the All New All-changing-everything and All-emptying wallets Marvel new crossover event. I’m happy to see Olivier Coipel on this because that means more $$ for him but it would nice to see him used a little more creatively (like that time they made him redesign all of Asgard, almost a decade ago). Update: I’m psy-powered it seems, as Olivier is back on Thor as its ongoing penciller and designer post Civil War 2, with the relaunch of the Classic Thor.

3- PUNISHER

05/16- Punisher #1 - 110,726

Steve Dillon is back on the character, with a new writer, Becky Cloonan. Even if it sounds stupid, I’m curious to see what a female writer will perhaps add to such a testoterone-charged character.

1- CAPTAIN AMERICA STEVE ROGERS

05/16- Cap America SR #1 - 99,768

Nice debut for this new volume. With all the stupid controversy (can we even call it controversy when there is nothing controversial at all, only fictional drama as usual?), someone could have expected a more impressive debut, but perhaps this will show in reorders next month. Is it the first time Jesus Saiz is at the helm of a new title at Marvel? If so, let’s wish him good luck. Since Checkmate, DC hasn’t really used him wisely (he was for example completely inappropriate on Resurrection Man 2).

A new story arc bring in many more copy ordered, proof that the shops have new customers for the series, probably wanting to switch from paperback to floppies. There is no variant cover and it’s $5, making this jump all the more impressive.

9- 133-BLACK PANTHER

04/16- Black Panther #1 - 268,782 [+15,523]
05/16	Black Panther #2 - 77,654 (-71.2%)

Nobody expected this one to crack the 100K with issue#2. But, even if the reorder activity makes it look worse, there had to be some special deals to explain such a difference. So far, amazing sales, of course.

05/16 Amazing Spider-Man #1.5 – 41,907 (- 5.1%)

Start of a new arc, so there is a nice rebound. Meanwhile, the late last 1. issue is out. Will apparently be relaunched with the additional name Renew your Vows post Civil War 2. Remember, a mini with the same name once skyrocketed in sales during Secret Wars, almost reaching the level of Amazing Spider-Man #1 numbers.

12- STAR WARS POE DAMERON

04/16- SW Poe Dameron Ltd #1 - 175,322
05/16 SW Poe Dameron Ltd #2 - 68,922 (-60.7%)

Ouch! So there are more than 100,000 copies of issue #1 out there without their #2 counterpart. It’s not a $1 issue bin retailers are gonna need, it’s a whole shop! It seems to confirm that Star Wars comics buyers want « en masse » to read the original heroes adventures, not really the modern ones.

15- 220- 287-SPIDER-MAN DEADPOOL

01/16 Spider-Man Deadpool #1 - 164,256 [+7,601]

05/16 Spider-Man Deadpool #5 - 63,821 (- 1.7%)

Since issue #2: -20.7%

Excellent results, and gained without any variant cover on issue #5! Meanwhile, issues #1 and #3 put on some nice reorders. This is clearly an amazing success. Expect other team-up books with Deadpool, Spider-Man or Mighty Thor to appear soon.

Issue #12 features Deadpool 2099. We can safely say that this one is not ready to have his own title yet.

18- DEADPOOL LAST DAYS OF MAGIC ($5)

Despite this huge fall (but without any variant), this is still an amazing success, with very few readers lost on the way and a sales level unheard of for years on a Wolverine title.

Introducing the new Wasp, with a a new costume, very nice but probably a nightmare to draw for pencillers. New French talent Elsa Charretier will pencil a Wasp ongoing series after Civil War 2. You already saw her on Starfire for DC and with the release of her creator owned-book The Infinitie Loop at IDW. Saleswise, everything is doing perfectly OK for this title.

Exploring the Viking roots of the title, which is nice. Sales take a dump, but the title is still doing great and would have to lose way more readers to be considered a fail.

32- THUNDERBOLTS

05/16- Thunderbolts #1 - 45,169

A very weak debut for this new volume, calling back a huge portion of the original cast of the series. But the cover art and costume designs do scream « 90’s esthestics » , which isn’t very appealing, at least for me, despite all my love for the old cast.

Those minis will keep going on. Not only do they sell well in floppies, but they add a new volume to Deadpool TPB collection, which means a steadily income each and every month, for each of them released.

37- DAREDEVIL / PUNISHER ($5)

Back where it was before Stand Off, but a little lower. Apparently, we are supposed to be intrigued by Rogue meeting Gambit. Geez, is the love imbroglio between those two not over yet? It’s so annoying.

05/16 Gwenpool #0 - 33,797

One of the worst recent falls from issue #1. That’s not a good sign at all for what will perhaps be as fleeting as an internet buzz. Issue #0, at $5, reprints her recent Howard The Duck back-ups.

47- 281-MOON KNIGHT

05/16 Moon Knight #2 - 35,489 (-45.7%)

Reorder activity on issue #1 make it less impressive than it is, but the fall from issue#1 is actually even lower than that, which is a good start.

Falling behind its « older brother », which probably wasn’t planned. And this despite a gorgeous Shakespearian naked cover. What a shame! Will be relaunched already post Civil War, with the same creative team.

49- DEADPOOL MASSACRE LTD

05/16- Deadpool Massacre Ltd #1 - 34,463

Presenting Mexico Deadpool.

50- NIGHTHAWK

05/16- Nighthawk #1 - 34,039

That’s not a good debut. But come on, 3 ongoing series on Squadron Supreme characters, isn’t that a bit too much? The action takes place in Chicago. So Chicago-based readers should support this one more than the others. Not sure it will be enough, as it already seems like it won’t come back post Civil War 2.

We are now where the title should stabilize to be at the same level Daredevil was with the same creative team. Obviously, this turned out to be a little lower.

Back to its previous numbers, despite being still tied-in Stand Off. That’s not a good sign. OMG! Redwing now has torpedoes on its back?! I noticed he’s white now but is he still called Redwing?

Part 7 of the event. $ count to follow this event so far: $29. $5 more to go with Spider-Women Omega next month. That will make it $34. That’s a lot of money not spent on diapers.

68- TOTALLY AWESOME HULK

Since issue #2: - 32.2%

Speeding up toward cancellation zone, despite having Mighty female Thor as a guest. Putting other people, from more diverse communities in the role of their long-running heroes is not always working saleswise. The signal seems pretty clear with this one: it will not stick. Are you prepared to have a green child murdered at the end of Civil War 2? –Update: well, not so! The title is continuing post Civil War 2, with no relaunch.

 69- ULTIMATES

05/16 Ultimates #7 - 26,500 (+ 1.4%)

Since issue #2 : - 28.5%

Kinda connected to Civil War 2 and guest starring Thanos. All this probably hides another 2K fall. This doesn’t really matter since it’s stated to be relaunched post Civil War 2.

71- POWER MAN AND IRON FIST

05/16 Power Man and Iron Fist #4 - 26,308 (- 0.7%)

No variant at all. Talk about an erratic behavior. Yet, I couldn’t be happier for it, Sanford Greene needs to be more recognized for his talent.

Struggling. This new Alpha Flight volume has to make it past issue #12! –Update: it will not, at least not on the cover, as it will be relaunched once again post Civil War 2. God, is it Volume 10 already or what?

The other hispanic hero of the MU will probably not beat its previous record of consecutive issues published but who would have bet a 2099 revival title would make it past 20 issues nowadays? That’s already a win.

83- MOCKINGBIRD

03/16- Mockingbird #1 - 42,335

Still an amazing level for this kind of product, usually totally ignored by MU core fans.

For those interested by Jay Fosgitt, the artist on this title, they can pick some My Little Pony titles at IDW, where he sometimes draw some of the funniest and best written stories currently produced. And you don’t need to be a brownie to enjoy that! The serie will be relaunched without Groot post Civil War 2.

Average +% TPB sales #1-5 : +11.0%
ANT-MAN TPB VOL.1: 4,406

Back to its previous sales level. All in all, Marvel will manage to sell more than 20 issues of an Ant-Man title, which isn’t bad. But apparently, not many more, since it’s not part of the relaunch line of titles post Civil War 2 – so far.

95- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN AND SILK: SPIDER(FLY) EFFECT LTD ($5)

The only title going up without any gimmick in the whole Marvel line is also the one its writer will leave. Once again, I can’t believe Marvel will not try to relaunch it. –Update: I’m no Dream Girl, so far, it disapeared from Marvel October sollicitations.

Falling behind the 20K line for the first time, after having nicely stabilized four months in a row. It will survive Civil War 2 and make it past issue #12, which is a nice proof of support by Marvel.

That’s weird. Either this Stand-off tie-in didn’t attract any new readers, or they decided to stay. Spider-Man costume looks a little weird on its Mike Norton cover (no variant this month). Marvel seem at last ready to give up on a SHIELD title post Civil War 2.

 114- VENOM SPACEKNIGHT

Well, apparently, the new Carnage is more popular than the new Venom. But Venom will be relaunched post Civil War 2!

If people are so into covers, why don’t buy « en masse » this title, seeing that David Aja is signing the better ones he has ever done every moth? In this issue, she’s traveling to Paris to meet Le Peregrine, the french hero we’re ashamed for! I’m betting two croissants he’s gonna try to seduce her in a very annoying way. It seems like this one gets axed before the end of Civil War 2.

This is what I was talking about. Marvel is just throwing those two issues in a row, 3 years after the last one released. This is just painful to see: 7K for an acclaimed Brian Bendis/Alex Maleev  creator owned book? Any other company could have done better.

  1. DEADPOOL MASSACRE LTD was actually a reprint of an issue of the regular Deadpool book – which was originally all in Spanish, IIRC. This reprint was a “badly translated into English” edition.

An extra 34k for someone lazily putting the script thru an Internet translator website? Not too shabby.

  2. RE: “167- X-MEN WORST X-MAN EVER LTD – That’s 4 times less readers than for Apocalypse Wars. Think of it the next time X-men fans will complain about endless crossovers.”

This is a “it doesn’t count” mini-series focused on an unestablished character.

I think most x-fans who complain about endless crossovers would like to see any number of the dozens of unused x-characters in a decent story set in continuity. (Or maybe it was just awful; I won’t be reading to find out).

  3. Jay Fosgitt is also writing and drawing the nice Bodie Troll at Oni Press (one completed mini-series and only one issue for the second but I can suddenly understand why :) )

  4. Hey, you can follow Dan Abnett’s career in 2000 AD too! Not just you despise the comics done in your native country, you are also despising the british too?

  5. Pedro Bouça I so despised Dan Abnett and british comics that the last issue of my magazine was focused on….Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, with a lot of articles on some of their UK work and I quote Dan more or less “the more introspective interview ever done on my work”.
Oh, and before that, which scripter did we spend almost an entire issue on? Mike Carey. Oh, and there is in every issue a column called English Corner dedicated to make french readers learn a little more about UK-produced comics.
So yeah, with all those informations, I suppose I’m probably despising UK comics, you’re right.

And where did you find any hint that I would despise french comics?
You can follow Dan Abnett’s career in novels too. Boo, that probably means that you despise prose, Bad boy!
The information you gave was insightful, yeah, Dan Abnett is also often working for 2000 AD. That was interesting. The rest? Callingsc me names for the sake of it, your choice.

  6. I just do not understand Marvel’s vision any more. Floppies are dying in favor of trades, yet they keep cancelling series and rebooting them which in turn destroys the demand for Marvel trades. They are starting to resemble DC in the area of bad management. I am seeing Marvel sales tank big time right now with the exception of just a few titles. Sure, Marvel has a bigger market share than DC but the floppy market is dying, Trades are the future and Marvel is going to screw their trade sales up royally with constant reboots.

  7. Xavier,

A fun column as usual, thank you.

To nitpick, some of your calculations seem a bit off? E.g.

    Uncanny Inhumans:
    Since issue #2 : – 3490%

    Silver Surfer:
    Since issue #2: -158%

  8. Well its nice to see Bendis’s endless anal rape of the marvel universe is finally having an effect. But I dont get why Captain Marvel keeps getting protected, its a terrible title.
