Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m the French guy who took over Jason for this column. Less figures, a comparison with the issue #2 sales and some TPB sales are the only big differences you could notice.
Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that just because a copy is sold to a shop doesn’t mean it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.
This months chart is rather quiet: there are very few changes in the way Marvel titles are ordered saleswise. We will soon enter a transition zone where most of the titles will disappear or shift toward a new direction (and a new renumbering, you can bet on that!). Meanwhile, two main things are happening in this month’s chart.
First, the Spider-Women titles are having an excellent month, lead by the amazing success of Spider-Gwen. For the second month in a row, her first issue reappears on the charts, selling twice as many copies as last month’s reordering!
Second, the Star Wars line of titles is expending and still making tons of $$$ for Marvel. At this rate, expect a R2D2 or C3PO ongoing title soon!
Those two trends are still young. Seeing how people seem excited only by looking at a trailer, the Star Wars titles should still sell like crazy until people will (again) be disappointed once the movie is out.
The Spider-Women trend is more a surprise, and could give birth either to new Spider-Women titles (Spider-Girl, Arachne and Madame Web are waiting in the corner), new female versions (along the lines of Thor) of famous heroes, or, best of all, new female super-heroes titles (like the upcoming A-Force).
But Secret Wars is on its way: among the deceased every crossover is producing, will we see more or less female heroes biting the dust? Place your bets!
Oh, and it was Women of Marvel month (that means a women theme for variant covers). The titles being part of it are labeled in this chart with a * and are suddenly gifted with an extra 2-3K readers…no, excuse me, buyers, I don’t want to insult anyone.
I put the TPB sales on the charts, if they are related to one of the featured series. If not, they are not here, except for the ones I want to feature at the beginning of this chart because I feel they are special and deserve a spotlight.
A “Average +% TPB sales # – #” is now featured. It will show how much more a series is selling thanks to the various trade collections. Usually, the standard release of collections is: HC, TPB and then huge collection and reprints. Seeing that I just started, those +% TPB percentages are mostly at their lowest. It can only go up after that, with the release of a new form of collection in the months to come.
SUPER-VILAIN UNITE TPB 464p, $35, cents per page: 7.6 cents Since March 2015: 1,129
This collect the complete Super-Villains Team-up series and some extra. More than a bargain, it is a scarce series, way ahead of its time. And check this very small price per page! It sold very well seeing how obscure it is.
AVENGERS QUICKSILVER TPB 440p, 35$, cents per page: 8.0 cents Since March 2015: 726
Ouch! Despite its nice cover price and the release of another Avengers movie, this collection of the Quicksilver ongoing series from the late 90’s hasn’t found its public. Marvel is trying to release a collection on each Avenger member. Next month, it’s gonna be Scarlet Witch. We’ll see if she does better.
1- 5- PRINCESS LEIA LTD* 03/15 Princess Leia Ltd #1 of 5 – 253,655 03/15 Princess Leia Ltd #2 of 5- 96,262 (-62.1%)
Those numbers suggest that Princess Leia was mostly seen as an ongoing series and that curiosity is still so strong among readers to have a Marvel Star Wars title in their hands that they would buy anything, even if they don’t read the whole story. With the relative success of some female-centered Marvel series, could it be that Marvel will change this one to an ongoing status? Could be. (10 Variant covers for #1!)
2- STAR WARS 01/15 Stars Wars #1 - 1,019,121 [+33.145] 02/15 Stars Wars #2 - 189,710 (-81.4%) [+27,668] 03/15 Star Wars #3 - 161,226 (-15.0%) Since issue #2: -15.0%
Issue 2 has a very good reorder activity this month, but even with that, this -15% is a good number. An ongoing Star Wars title selling every month more than 100k would be a dream and, so far, we are way ahead of those numbers. So far, everything is working for Marvel on the Star Wars side of comics.
3- 41- 47- GUARDIANS TEAM-UP 03/15 Guardians Team-up #1 - 155,388 03/15 Guardians Team-up #2 - 38,390 (-75.3%) 03/15 Guardians Team-up #3 - 40,637 (+ 5.9%) B. Vortex Since issue #2: +5.9%
This -75,3% is one of the ugliest we have seen for months. And issue #3 is only slightly going up because it’s a Black Vortex crossover. This doesn’t bold well for the sales trend this title is following. We probably have already reach the limit of $$$ Guardians of Galaxy’s fans are ready to spend to follow the adventures of their new favorite characters.
4- SPIDER-GWEN 02/15 Spider-Gwen #1 - 254,074 03/15 Spider-Gwen #2 - 107,070 (-57.8%)
Everything is going perfectly all right for Spider-Gwen. This -57,8% was to be expected. I know some people in France almost never buying any original American floppy who bought this #1 only…to show they possess the Spider-Gwen #1 comics! To be noted: Spider-Gwen costume is classy and trendy, a very nice design, rendering nicely the angelic/pure side every kid ever saw in good old Gwen Stacy.

Spider-verse being over, numbers go back to where they should have been without the extra readers. Marvel is not giving up on its pointless .1 numbering. The result? This Gerry Conway story (isn’t it nice to see him back for this?) has almost 20k readers less than if released as a normal issue, despite being on the cover of the Marvel Previews. At the same time, released as a mini-séries, it would have sold less than that. The numbering is just silly: why bother doing double shipping issues if you’re not gonna take advantage of it by releasing every issue in the main title, with the main numbering? Next issues of Gerry Conway stories are to be numbered 17.1, 18.1 and so on. Find the logic in that…
7- HOWARD THE DUCK 03/15 Howard the Duck #1 – 85,929
Trapped in sales he never made! That is so unlike Howard The Duck to sell like this! Those are excellent debut sales, but beware of the #2 step. It could put this one in She-Hulk territory. With 7 variant covers, let’s start to fear the worst! .
8- DARTH VADER 02/15 Darth Vader #1 - 264,449 02/15 Darth Vader #2 – 107,856(-59.2%) [+7,846] 03/15 Darth Vader #3 - 85,156 (-21.0%) Since issue #2: -14,9%
Everything is going ok for the most charismatic villain of the Star Wars universe. Issue #2 appear at a nice reorder sales level and this issue#3 fall is not bad, taking this into account.
11- THOR* 12/12 Thor v5 #1 - 110,443 ... 02/14 Thor #19.Now– 42.034 ( 10.1%) ... 09/14 Thor v5 #25 – 53,047 ( 38.4%) 10/14 Thor v6 #1 – 150,862 ( 184.4%)[10,756] 11/14 Thor v6 #2 – 89,131 ( -40.9%) 12/14 Thor v6 #3 – 72,563 ( -18.6%) 01/15 Thor v6 #4 - 69,497 ( -4.2%) 02/15 Thor v6 #5 - 69,513 ( +0.0%) 03/15 Thor v6 #6 - 70,569 ( +1.5%) Since issue #2: -20,8%
The trend confirms: female Thor seems to work. This new arc is supposed to reveal who’s hiding behind female Thor. Expect a sales burst for the revelation issue!
12- SILK 02/15 Silk #1 - 86,263 [+11,762] 03/15 Silk #2 - 69,369 (-19.6%)
With not so impressive debut sales, I was expecting this one to follow Jessica Drew way down but it seems I was wrong: excellent reorder activity of its #1 and an even better issue #2 step down (only 5k readers lost if we do not take into account the reorder activity): the future looks bright for Silk!
16- ALL NEW HAWKEYE* 09/12 Hawkeye v4 #2 - 33,563 --- 02/15 Hawkeye v4 #21 – 32,607 (- 4.6%) END 03/15 All New Hawkeye #1 - 66,608
God…Will the joke never stops? It seems there is still an old Hawkeye final issue to be released but…surprise, the relaunch is beginning before even the previous volume is over! What a mess…Extra-talented and supra-nice Ramon Perez has finally an ongoing series at one of the big two. He is fast, Jeff Lemire too, so the scheduling nightmare that was Hawkeye is finally over (well, there is still this final issue to wait for..). Those are good debut sales. It would be simply amazing if this volume would sell at the same level than the previous one, especially on the trade paperback market. Will readers make the jump from the old Hawkeye to the new one? Let’s hope so!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.4 HC ORIGINAL SIN 168p, 30$, $ per page: 17.9 cents Since March 2015: 2,241
+3.6% in sales is a good start to begin with. Remember that this is an expensive HC edition. A standard paperback edition will follow, and after that big giant editions. Selling more than 2K for a Marvel HC is a great number (it’s already a good number for a paperback edition!).

Yeah! Issue #37 released after issue #38. It being not a Black Vortex crossover, it goes back to the standard numbers for All New X-Men.
ALL NEW X-MEN VOL.6 HC ULTIMATE ADVENTURE 136p, 18$, cents per page: 13.2 cents Since March 2015: 1,901
All New X-Men is still selling nicely on the trade market in comics shops.
23- Amazing SPIDER-MAN Special Ltd 03/15 Amazing Spider-Man Special Ltd 1 of 3 - 51,632
That’s weird. Okay, we now have an example of what I was saying: here is a mini-series, selling 40k less than the main title and 20k less than .1 numbered issues. To be fair, this one is more expensive (4,99$) but is badly advertised: since when are the Specials not self-contained? This story will continue with Special #2 and Special #3. Still, despite all of this, selling a Spider-man special or mini or whatever you call it at 50k is the proof that the Spider-Man brand is at his highest right now.

When preliminaries are so long, expectations for what follows are out-of-this-world! Marvel loves to make love to….your wallet! Anyway, it’s working: it’s growing, growing…

I’ll be frank : I have absolutely no idea why this title is rebounding like that. It’s not the Women of Marvel variant (it’s for issue# 33, late). It’s not the last issue of Bendis run… your guess is mine.
UNCANNY X-MEN VOL. 5HC OMEGA MUTANT 136p, 25$, cents per page: 18.4 cents Since March 2015: 1,380
Not only is this collection on the expensive side of the HCs but it’s selling rather poorly compared to its parent title, with a less than +3% from its floppy sales. Nothing really surprising here: the X-Men are not big sellers of paperbacks (except the usual classic or crossover collections).

This volume is at his lowest so far (this ugly -11% is probably due to a late in the month shipping date). Absolutely nothing to worry about, Deadpool is still a steady seller. And don’t forget that Marvel multiplied his profit on this title one year ago by switching it from 2,99$ to 3,99$ without any change in sales(you can still try to make your own cover paper for it). Let’s congratulate Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn, who will probably sign one the longest modern run on a Marvel character.

The power of Black Vortex + a Women of Marvel variant makes Star Lord see the stars. It will shift to a seemingly romance book with Kitty Pride once Secret Wars starts. We have been waiting 30 years since the demise of Dazzler to see a romance comics back at Marvel. I can’t wait!

That’s unexpected, to say the least. Spider-Woman having a new costume? John Byrne used to made it every issue. Spider-verse being over and Greg Land out, I would have expected the title to take a plunge. If I don’t have anything to say about the design of her new costume, doesn’t it make Jessica Drew look way much younger than she should be? We’ll see next month if it’s the costume or the Spider-Gwen effect which attracted readers back.

Thanks for the analysis.
Speaking about Hawkeye, wasn’t third issue of All New Hawkeye also delayed?
I seem to remember a while back that Heavy Metal magazine did the same thing with women featured on their covers. They reported sales were much higher when women were on the cover, so they were featured there from then on. Wouldn’t be surprised if the big two followed suit here, at least as a theme on monthly variant covers.
The Women of Marvel Variants were called that because the artists were women, not the characters. Some of the covers featured male characters (like the Legendary Star-Lord cover by Sana Takeda).
Tessa: thanks for the correction. Well, it seems they took the opportunity to also almost put everytime female characters on the variant cover.
HsssH: I don’t follow the delay reports (too much of them), could be. Perhaps they again did the double shipping thing and couldn’t keep the pace?
Heidi, it’s missing the sales charts tag :p
I think a good part of the Guardians 3000 sales fall is the bad art. So blocky and indistinct at times if feels like the book is bush league work.
Princess Leia was literally sold as an ongoing by Marvel. The print subscription was for 12 issues. As a matter of fact you can still sign up for a 12 month sub as of right now.
mk: thx, this confirmed my intuition. On their previews catalog, it was marked as a 5 part mini-serie.
It’s heartbreaking that “Elektra” had to end so soon. I mean, clearly, Marvel can’t justify continuing an ongoing that’s consistently outsold by fucking “Miracleman” reprints, but… *extended groan*
Maybe more readers will take a chance on artist Del Mundo’s next project: “Weirdworld”?
PS: I’m really digging the way you’re handling this column, Xavier. Keep up the good work!
Another great analysis!
I’m not surprised by Deathlok’s spiral into oblivion. It…never seemed like a good title to launch in the first place. Even with a solid creative team. I think Marvel is bloating their market, which is why a lot of titles tend to fall quickly (see Storm, Cyclops, Avengers World). At $4 cover price, fans just can’t justify the extra pull unless it blows them away.
