Marvel Month-to-Month Sales Charts September 2016: Prediction Malfunction!

Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my «we are also dommed in 2017 » country.

Very quiet month for Marvel without any new launch, be it an ongoing or a mini-serie, and absolutely no noticeable reorder activity in the top 300. It’s also rather quiet on the variant cover front, whit no titles having more than 5 variant covers.

The Civil War II tag has infected almost every comics published by Marvel this month but, for those who are already in their 3rd or fourth month of being tagged, not only did the effect wear off, but their sales have reach sometimes rather steeply their lowest level ever.

All in all, the CW2 tag, except on the first month he appears on a title, seems to have brought very few readers.

The top 10 Marvel titles presents a nice mix of first class/secondary characters and superhero subgenres. Not only do they have strong sales, but they seem in no danger of a sudden collapse.

So yes, a quiet month, but a month of consolidation for its top titles. For the others, between the ones sinking very very low very very fast and the others, struggling to survive above 20K when they don’t have stellar TPB sales, the situation could prove even worst once CV2 and its tie-in tags disapear. The solution found, so far, has either been the cancellation in silence, the blunt relaunch or the rebranding relaunch (selling the same thing under another name). Take your bets, but remember that the future is sometimes unpredictable!

Before looking at the floppy sales, I propose to you a focus on Ms Marvel TPB sales. I often see in comments people rambling about this serie, not understanding why it’s currently one of the most succesfull Marvel property. This should help.

Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.

Let’s take a look at Ms. Marvel sales in TPB format. That will make you understand why, even if the series only sold 10K in floppies, it would never ever been cancelled.

The first number is the number of copies sold on the first month of release. The second number is the total of copies sold on the first trimester of release. The last number is so far the total number of copies sold through Diamond for the US, based only on the TOP 300 charts. Remember that when it comes to trade paperbacks, especially with a series like Ms. Marvel which is quite attractive to young and/or female readers, many copies are also sold through other channels.

Vol.1 has sold more than 1K almost every month since its release. Vol. 2 after one year of greatness, is selling around 500 copies every two months. Vol. 3 hasn’t showep up again in the top300 after its first 8 months, which doesn’t mean that it’s not selling every month, but probably under 400 copies a month. Vol.4 hasn’t shown up again after its first trimester.

Remember that we are only talking about copies sold to comics shop through Diamond AND that every month, sales of books under 400 copies are not taken into account. It has been two years that every single month, vol.1 of the Ms Marvel paperback is selling at least 1K per month!

The first arc of Ms Marvel has sold MORE in tpb form than in floppies! No other property at Marvel (except perhaps Deadpool, which we’ll look at next month) has been able to do that.

Two issues and an Annual released the same month ! The several variants of issue#18 and its CV2 tag explain such a difference with the next issue. The Annual is selling at the same level than the ongoing, with more than 50K. Marvel could be tempted to release more than one Annual per year for the serie with results like that. And who would notice ?
