The surface world and Atlantis have been on the brink of all-out war for months in the current Invaders series, and this January Namor and his forces are set to face off against another of Marvel’s super-teams. The publisher has announced, via Newsarama, Atlantis Attacks, a new five-issue miniseries pitting the undersea king against the Agents of Atlas. The series, which sees the team defending the Portal City of Pan from invading Atlantean forces, will be written by Greg Pak, with art by Ario Anindito and covers by Rock-He Kim. The title of the series is a throwback to a storyline that took place across Marvel’s annuals back in 1989.
The current iteration of the Agents of Atlas made their first appearance during this summer’s War of the Realms event series, where they starred in a four-issue miniseries, before spinning off into their own five-issue series, currently set to wrap in December. The team features heroes either native to Asia or of Asian descent, including Silk, Brawn, Jimmy Woo, Aero, and White Fox, among several others. Atlantis Attacks will see the team interact for the first time with Jimmy Woo’s original Agents of Atlas team, which featured prominent 1950s superheroes including Gorilla-Man, Namora, and 3-D Man.
Agents of Atlas has been a true success story coming out of War of the Realms, bringing prominence to a team not made up primarily of white male characters, and attracting new readers to characters who for the first time look like them. It’s nice to see them continue on in a series that ties them even more closely to events in the larger Marvel Universe.
