The latest adaptation of Philip Pullman‘s bestselling fantasy trilogy, His Dark Materials, debuts on BBC and HBO Nov. 4. Ahead of the premiere, the networks released a final, heart-pounding trailer for the series, which stars Dafne KeenJames McAvoyRuth Wilson, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. In the new trailer, Keen’s character Lyra Belacqua, a.k.a. Lyra Silvertongue, is told to choose a side — the Magisterium or the resistance.

Although we’ve seen glimpses of the alethiometer — a truth-telling golden compass that Lyra can read with a skill no one else possesses — this trailer gives us our first in-depth look at it and how it drives the story. We also learn about the multiverse through McAvoy’s character, Lord Asriel, as well as just how high the stakes are for Lyra and the other children of this world. The Magisterium is taking them — and with Lyra’s help, and the help of the armored bear Iorek Byrnison, and the help of Lee Scoresby (Miranda) and his hot air balloon, the children might just make it out alive.

This trailer fully depicts how powerful Lyra Silvertongue is, even as she strives to learn her role in the pending war: “The fate of more than this world depends on her.” Once again, it’s clear that series writer Jack Thorne is not shying away from the darkness of Pullman’s novels, nor are producers Toby EmmerichDeborah ForteJane Tranter and Piers Wenger.
