Mad Cave has announced La Mancha, a six-issue horror series reimagining the Spanish area’s most infamous resident, Don Quixote. Written by Christopher Sebela with art by Ibrahim Moustafa, colors by Brad Simpson, and lettering by Joe Sabino, and based on the original 1615 novel by Miguel de Cervantes, the comic follows the woman Quixote is obsessed with, Dulcinea del Toboso, as she embarks on a quest to stop the mad wannabe knight.
The official synopsis reads, “In an era between the age of knights and modern life sits Don Quixote, a man whose love of that bygone era sends him on a bloody spree of mayhem across the land of La Mancha to save the world. With a reluctant assistant, Sancho Panza, at his side, the delusional knight leaves a trail of bodies behind him and tilts at windmills in search of an evil enchanter, dedicating it all to the object of his storybook delusion — Dulcinea del Toboso.”
It continues, describing Dulcinea as “a farm girl working to keep her family’s farm alive, [but who] is forced to leave her life behind and take up arms to stop this murderous stranger and defend the one thing that she truly owns: her name.” The creators are not quoted in the press release, but their take is described “as a brutal, [yet still] darkly funny tale of obsession, identity and the danger of believing your own legend.”
The book marks Moustafa’s first at Mad Cave, and his first collaboration with Sebela since 2013-15’s murder mystery High Crimes. Sebela’s next Mad Cave series, the reboot of Rip Kirby, will debut in the meantime on November 4.
La Mancha #1 will be released on December 16, with a main cover by Moustafa, and variants by Jacob Phillips, Phil Hester, and Francesco Francavilla, which you can check out below.
