Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, an upcoming series from DreamWorks is the latest news coming from the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. The Thursday reveal adds to Netflix’s ever expanding array of kids’ animated series like The Dragon Prince, Hilda and She-Ra and the Princesses of PowerIn fact, the streamer is doubling down on the wild popularity of She-Ra by casting Glimmer’s voice actresses, Karen Fukuhara, as this series’ titular character, Kipo.
Kipo is a singing, monster-fighting young girl in a post-apocalyptic world. She was raised underground, with the majority of the population – the surface was crawling with beasts, after all. Luckily for Kipo, when she begins her adventure and scales upwards, she finds a fantastical setting filled with creatures that all want to eat her. But at least they’re adorable! Kipo eventually finds a group of survivor-pals to help her on the way through this “vibrant wonderland.”
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is executive produced by Radford Sechrist (How to Train Your Dragon 2) and Bill Wolkoff (Once Upon a Time). Sechrist created the series, while Wilkoff developed it for TV. Although Kipo is based on a webcomic of the same name, created by Sechrist, it appears the link to access the original work is out of order.
