Goodbye, Drogo! On Wednesday, Aquaman and former Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa posted a shocking video diary on YouTube. In it, he goes into the desert and… shaves his beard. That may not seem like a big deal, but Momoa admits that he hasn’t shaved his facial hair since 2012 — a whopping seven years ago. Plus, it’s an iconic part of his look, not just as a recognizable face in Hollywood but as an actor whose most famous characters have sported that epic beard.
In the video, Momoa shaves off small pieces of hair and says goodbye to a different character each time. Of course, the video has a deeper meaning, too; he shared it to encourage his fans to do better by the planet by recycling and ditching plastics for a more recyclable material, namely aluminum.
“Goodbye DROGO, AQUAMAN, DECLAN, BABA!” Momoa captioned the video. “I’m shaving this beast off, it’s time to make a change. A change for the better…for my kids, for your kids, the world. Let’s make a positive change for the health of our planet. Let’s clean up our oceans and our land. Join me on this journey. Let’s make a switch to INFINITELY RECYCLABLE aluminum. Water in cans, NOT plastic.”
As he notes in the video itself, “Aquaman’s doing the best he can.”
At any rate, it’s pretty stunning to see Momoa sans beard. After all, he’s rocked that facial hair for almost a decade. Now the question is: will he have to grow it back for his next role?
