Former Goddess of Thunder Jane Foster dons another Asgardian mantle this July in Jane Foster: Valkyrie #1 by Al Ewing, Jason Aaron, and artist Cafu. Joining them on cover duties are Conan the Barbarian artists Mahmud Asrar and Matthew Wilson.
[Note: spoilers for War of the Realms #2 ahead!]
Following the brutal events of War of the Realms #2 where Malekith and his forces slaughtered the Valkyries, Valhalla ceases to exist without a warrior to protect it. Co-writer Al Ewing spoke about Jane’s role as the new Valkyrie in a statement. He said, “There’s a line in VALKYRIE #1: ‘Thor is a god, Valkyrie is a job.’ Jane knows how to be Thor but the role of Valkyrie – the warrior who fights for the living and the dead, and stands between both – is a very different beast.”
He continued, “It’s a sacred task, and brings additional abilities – and responsibilities – of its own. As the first of a new generation of Valkyries, Jane has to decide for herself what the task involves, and that’s a big part of what we’ll be exploring in this series. If you’re reading this, you know who Valkyrie is, but WHAT she is is one of the big philosophical underpinnings of the book.”
Ewing also talks about a new addition to the Valkyrie arsenal, a weapon that we haven’t seen before: “She does have something not seen before in the world of Asgard – UNDRJARN THE ALL-WEAPON, forged in the fires of the Realm-War, that can change its shape and be whatever the wielder needs – including wings!”
Jane’s Valkyrie costume was designed by none other than designer extraordinaire Russell Dauterman, who designed her appearance in Mighty Thor.

HAWKGIRL!!!
cool.
I believe Esad Ribic was the one who designed her Thor appearance.
At least she’s not Thor anymore. Still it’s a good character and this should be a new direction for her. But I thought the traditional roll of the Valkyeri were to collect the souls of dead heroes and put them into Valhalla. Then again with death being so pointless in comics it is a good idea to re-invent the roll. Agreed though, she does look a little like Hawkgirl on that cover.
Soon to be followed by “Death of Valkyrie” I’m sure. ;) Just kidding. Glad to see Jane Foster is at least getting a third chance to be her own character.
