The Suicide Squad is just around the corner and we’re speaking with the cast members of the James Gunn flick to talk all about this wild ride. When Task Force X is brought to Corto Maltese, the supervillains-cum-Bell-Reve-inmates must trek through the treacherous jungles of the island in order to complete the mission sent by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), or else get their heads blown off by her.
We spoke with Juan Diego Botto and Joaquín Cosío about their roles as Presidente General Silvio Luna and Mayor General Mateo Suarez, respectively. The two military men are the newly minted authority on Corto Maltese and must face not only the threat of the Task Force X but also the fallout of the skeleton hiding in the country’s proverbial closet aka Starro.
In regards to these two ruling despots, producer Charles Roven said, “What James did by including characters like Suarez and Luna, and especially Amanda Waller, is show a very dark side that at certain points is almost more extreme than our Squad, which makes you root for them even more.”
With Botto, we discussed his relationship with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), who General Luna strikes up an immediate rapport with. A bit of a romantic, Luna has been looking for his queen, and Botto explained just what attracted Luna to a woman like Harley. With Cosío, we discussed Suarez’s encounter with the monstrous Starro and the challenges that he might have faced imagining such a massive opponent. Then, of course, with such a packed cast of characters, we had to know who the two actors would have played had the roles been reversed, the answer might surprise you! Watch The Beat‘s interview with them below!
The government sends the most dangerous supervillains in the world — Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and others — to the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Col. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) on the ground to make them behave.
The Suicide Squad comes to theaters and HBO Max on August 6th!
