When lawmakers finally acknowledged COVID-19 and encouraged staying indoors, Ice Cream Man writer W. Maxwell Prince, artist Martin Morazzo, colorist Chris O’Halloran, and letterer Good Old Neon launched an online-only series of mini-comics set in the ICM universe subtitled Quarantine Comix. Not only was is it a welcome reprieve from boredom, the series also supported struggling comic shops, as 50 percent of all digital proceeds were donated to Comicbook United Fund/BINC Foundation.
Now, Ice Cream Man Presents: Quarantine Comix #1 will be available in print as well, with the same deal in place to provide half of proceeds to non-profits. The extra-length issue will collect all six short stories, along with brand-new cover art – and even bonus stories from guest creators including Declan Shalvey, Al Ewing, PJ Holden, Deniz Camp, Artyom Topilin, Aditya Bidikar, Christopher Cantwell, and Eoin Marron. Look for it on shelves beginning Wednesday, September 9.
“We at Team ICM are so jazzed to bring these kooky shorts to print—it’s another chance for us to help the brick-and-mortar shops that have nurtured and fed us from youth through adulthood,” said Prince. “That we also get to broaden the Ice Cream Man mythos in the process is just the cherry on top.”
Morazzo added: “Quarantine Comix has been a surprising experiment! Working real fast, a short story per week, also inviting insanely talented colleagues and sharing the ICM world with them, all of it while helping comic shops, during these strange hard times, felt really good! Now, all these stories will be printed in a single book and we’ll have the chance to keep helping!”
I’ve gladly bought and read all but the most recent of these stories (which I think just came out today?) and they’re as great as the regular book. I look forward to picking this up, too.
