As mentioned here before, nominations for the 2008 Lulu Awards are open. Anyone can nominate. These are the categories:

The Women Cartoonists Hall of Fame nominees must have published work, whether self-published, company-published, or Web-published. An individual cannot win more than once.

Women of Distinction nominees must have worked in the comic industry in a non-creator role, such as editing, publishing, reporting, or retail.

The Lulu of the Year Award honors the creator(s), book or other project whose work best exemplifies Friends of Lulu’s mission.

The Kim Yale Award nominees must have published work, whether self-published, company-published, or Web-published. Nominees must be nominated for this category within three years of their first published work. An individual may not be nominated more than twice, and cannot win more than once. The award is named for comics writer Kim Yale, a founding Lulu member who passed away in 1997.


Come on peeps, let’s get the best people for the job recognized for their efforts. Suggest possible nominees in the comments.

    Laura Park definitely deserves more attention… Why hasn’t someone published more of her stuff yet? it boggles the mind.

    Another for the Kim Yale award is Hellen Jo (http://helllllen.org/) — her current gallery work and comics stuff in Giant Robot is exceptional, and when the graphic novel she’s working on RIGHT NOW comes out, it’s gonna blow minds.

  9. Is there a category for Joanne Siegel? This seems a year worth recognizing her work for the last SIXTY; even if it was outside the industry, it was still definitely for comics.

  10. I first saw Lucy Knisely’s stuff (http://www.stoppayingattention.com/) at MOCCA last year, and have subsequently been blown away weekly by the work on her website. She’s one of the most prolific artists I’ve ever seen, slamming out new, really top-notch comics on an almost daily basis, with exceptional quality, storytelling chops and gorgeous brushwork.

    It’s always exciting to see someone who’s gung-ho embrace of the medium is matched by the talent.

    Knisely is probably #1 on my list of up-and-comers to keep an eye on and see what they do.

  17. Julia Wertz is acerbic, insightful, truthful, talented and just plain FUNNY all at once. She is someone who will continue to leave her mark on the comix biz for many years to come…a long career is ahead of that young lady, for sure.
