Deadline reports Francis Galluppi, the director of the upcoming Evil Dead Wrath, will write a new John Constantine movie for DC Studios. While details were vague, it does not appear to be connected to the previous 2005 film version, directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Keanu Reeves (which had a sequel mooted recently), with the report emphasizing the character’s British comics counterpart, originally created by Alan Moore, Stephen R. Bissette, and John Totleben for 1985’s Swamp Thing #37.

Despite not having appeared in a theatrical film since 2005, John Constantine has enjoyed a healthy media presence, having been portrayed by Matt Ryan on several TV shows and animated projects after his debut on the shortlived NBC series in 2014. A genderbent version, Johanna Constantine, played by Jenna Coleman, also appeared on Netflix’s The Sandman.

A rebooted TV series, produced by J.J. Abrams, and written by Guy Bolton (Hijack), was being developed for HBO Max, before being passed on by the streamer in 2022. This was seemingly in part because Reeves had started to express interest in reprising the role, and Abrams himself became attached as a producer to the planned follow-up.

The last word on the supposed sequel came in late 2025, when DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed he hadn’t received a script for the project yet. With Lawrence now set to direct a Red Rising movie (which he says “seems to be a priority at Paramount”), it’s possible Gunn and Peter Safran decided to move on with a DCU take on Constantine, instead of reviving Reeves’s universe.

With Clayface having received generally positive reviews, and topped the box office, grossing $90.6 million against a $40 million budget, it seems fans can look forward to more horror projects from DC Studios. In the meantime, Evil Dead Wrath, the seventh movie in the series, will be released on April 7, 2028, while its predecessor, Evil Dead Burn, is available now digitally and on physical media.
